Job Description

This is a one-year grant-funded position.

The School Health Services Specialist provides key high-level support to the central office School Health Services team. The Specialist will also provide support with required state reporting and monitoring of division health data. The Specialist will work with contractors, collaborate with school and City organizations and groups, primarily the Alexandria Health Department, oversee the entry and verification of COVID-19 testing data, coordinate the COVID-19 screening testing program, and ACPS contact tracing efforts, and address any needed protective equipment supply inventory and procurement. The Specialist will also serve as a School Health Services representative on various internal and external committees and workgroups as assigned. The Specialist will provide training to school nurses and other school health personnel as assigned. This job resides in the Department of Student Service & Equity.


Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing required; Master's degree in nursing, education, public health, or related field preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Virginia. Current CPR certification.

Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in nursing with increasing levels of responsibility is required. Experience in school nursing preferred. Experience in personnel management and program administration is preferred. Experience with procurement and contractors preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Possesses knowledge of theory, procedures, and practices related to school and student health and wellness.
  • Possesses an understanding of public health concerns and procedures for treatment in coordination with local health and social service agencies. Training and knowledge specifics to school health COVID-19 guidelines and practices.
  • Experience in coordinating with contractors and vendors.
  • Demonstrates an ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with other professionals within the schools and communities.
  • Demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates an ability to gather, analyze, interpret, and reconcile data.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of computers and software applications.

Essential Function:
  • Serve as a POC for COVID testing, vaccination planning, and contact tracing
  • Coordinates between school COVID teams and the Alexandria Health Department to support contact tracing efforts when cases are present in a school.
  • Maintains and supports proper ordering, inventory and distribution of school health clinic supplies to include PPE
  • Attend weekly ACPS/AHD meetings
  • Develop specific school health and school nurse protocols within ACPS
  • Supports School Health Services in the development of protocols and guidance related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Research and synthesize information about CDC, VDH, VDOE, and AHD guidance and regulations
  • Monitor and assist with ordering equipment needs for the School Health program
  • Provides support for required state reporting
  • Provides support and/or leads relationships with contractors to support additional staffing needs
  • Provides skills training to school nurses and other school health personnel as assigned
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance:
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
