The following organizations are part of the Research and Innovation Initiatives Group: Research Development Services, University Research Centers, Office of Research Computing, Institute for Biohealth Innovation (IBI), Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE), and Institute for Digital Innovation (IDIA). Collectively these organizations are focused on supporting, connecting, communicating about, and convening researchers internally and with external partners. The Institutes are the primary way in which George Mason is organizing and supporting multidisciplinary research in the three identified strategic research areas for the university. University Centers are multidisciplinary, chartered at the university level, and intended to support targeted research in areas of high impact. Research Development Services assists the Mason faculty-postdoc-student community with the identification of external funding opportunities and the development of high-quality proposals, sponsored projects, and translational activities. University Core Facilities, including the Office of Research Computing, Nanofabrication Facility, MRI, etc. are cutting-edge facilities that are available to all members of the Mason research community. In total, this set of activities and resources are intended to create a vibrant supportive university environment where members of the Mason research community can thrive. The Nanofabrication Facility is located on Mason Science and Technology Campus and administratively housed in IBI. The research conducted within the NFF will go well beyond biohealth application even though the facility is administratively housed within IBI. About the Position:The Nanofabrication Facility (NFF) Manager is a professional with knowledge and experience using clean room and characterization equipment, managing lab operations, and training end users. The NFF Manager's primary functions are to:Direct a 2,000 square foot NFF to the benefit of Mason faculty, staff, and students, as well as external stakeholders, while overseeing the safe operation of equipment and compliance with all relevant regulations, and Mason policies and procedures;Serve as a spokesperson for Mason to external organizations concerned with nanofabrication; andSupport research and classes/workshops that use the NFF.Responsibilities:Contribute to and Implement NFF Strategy: Work with faculty and advisory committee to contribute to the overall strategy for the NFF and implementation of that strategy to ensure growing benefit to the Mason community and to the Commonwealth, financial integrity and viability, and support to Mason's strategic plan. Serve as Principal Investigator on grant awards designed to advance the NFF and assist with proposal development on NFF related external funding applications.Manage Nanofabrication Facility Administration: Identity, procure, install, and qualify laboratory tools; ensure all necessary service contracts are in place for service, maintenance, and operations within the NFF; Plan, execute, and track preventative and regular maintenance in coordination with operators, Mason Facilities, and service engineers; maintain a supply of shared consumables; Coordinate with the IBI Office Manager for billing and purchasing; manage NFF scheduling and lab access for authorized individuals, and coordinate training across tools to ensure all users have received the necessary training. The NFF Manager will be the primary contact for tool and services vendors as well as oversee the NFF lab technician.Support users of the Nanofabrication Facility: Establish SOP for all NFF tools and processes; develop and implement NFF training for all users; work with investigators to design and implement new projects using NFF tools; support faculty in developing content and supporting classes and workshops that use the NFF.Operate the NFF: Oversee operation of NFF tools, troubleshoot, and ensure basic maintenance of NFF tools.Manage NFF Safety: Develop and ensure the implementation of policies and procedures for safe and efficient operations of the NFF; in collaboration with Mason's Environmental Health & Safety Office, facilitate user compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements; cease or suspend unsafe activities and instances of non-compliance until issues are resolved and corrective actions are taken; respond to any incidents or emergencies within the NFF that occur during and after normal work hours as needed.Fiscal Management of Operations: Manage the budgets and projects directly supporting NFF operations in coordination with NFF Advisory Committee.Outreach: Work with website developer to maintain and update content for the NFF for both internal and external stakeholders; coordinate with stakeholders for nanofabrication access and training programs; represent Mason as a spokesperson with organizations concerned with nanofabrication.Required Qualifications:Master's degree in scientific, engineering, or related field or equivalent relevant experience;Significant (generally seven (7) +) years of technical experience working in a clean room facility/laboratory with experience across several pieces of equipment;Considerable (generally three (3) +) years of experience managing laboratory operations and/or personnel;Demonstrated collaborative, interpersonal skills;Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills; andDemonstrated ability to solve complex problems, multi-task, and work with minimal supervision.Preferred Qualifications:Extensive (generally ten (10) +) years of experience managing clean room facility/laboratory;A terminal degree in a scientific, engineering, or related field (Ph.D. or similar);Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;Experience in a large dispersed university or industrial environment; andExperience securing external funding for research projects or laboratories.
