The Litigation Attorney (Two positions available) provides legal counsel and represents clients in civil litigation and other legal proceedings that will have a significant and equitable impact on senior poverty. This position focuses on reducing barriers to employment, increasing access to benefits, protecting consumers from unlawful business practices, and lowering out-of-pocket costs for key expenses. The Litigation Attorney also investigates potential cases, prepares cases for filing and trial, prepares amicus briefs, conducts discovery, and participates in negotiations. As the Litigation Attorney, you will collaborate with management to identify opportunities to streamline litigation preparation processes and develops new procedures that support the business unit/department.

Responsibilities

• Participating in litigation matters, including the planning, strategy, and execution of the case.
• Investigating potential cases to determine whether to recommend filing a lawsuit or an amicus brief.
• Performing legal analyses.
• Drafting pleadings, briefs, and other court filings.
• Conducting written and oral discovery, including taking and defending depositions.
• Participating in mediation and settlement negotiations on behalf of the clients.
• Arguing procedural and dispositive motions.
• Researching and writing amicus briefs.

Qualifications

• Completion of a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree and at least 3 years of post-J.D. experience as a practicing attorney.
• Experience with complex litigation preferred.
• Must be a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or be eligible for admission to the District of Columbia Bar.
• Experience in legal matters concerning low-income or older populations desirable.
• Experience with class or collective actions, especially on behalf of plaintiffs, is desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully litigate cases individually or in teams.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills; discretion and respect for confidentiality are essential.
• Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
• This is an in-office position and the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise is required, and a high level of verbal communication is required.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
