Academic Advisor - Department of Computer ScienceThe George Mason University Department of Computer Science (CS), within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), invites applications for multiple customer service driven individuals with outstanding communication to serve as Academic Advisors.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:These positions require strong customer-service orientation via email, telephone, and in-person, as well as strong interpersonal and presentation skills. There may be occasional work and recruitment activities needed that are outside of normal business hours that may be offsite, and/or remote.Undergraduate Academic AdvisorThis position includes the individual advising of current undergraduate students and prospective undergraduate students on a walk-in basis. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the tasks below:Perform administrative tasks related to students' progression in their computer science degree programs, educate students about university policies, and follow administrative procedures related to applications for course transfers, substitutions and waivers, and graduation;Maintain accurate records of interactions with students;Promptly provide e-mailed advising notes to students and to the student files;Refer students with academic progress issues or special requests to CEC Student Services or the Associate Chair as appropriate;Refer students, as appropriate, to specialized university offices for such issues as comprehensive counseling, financial assistance, study abroad, etc.;Participate in the development, implementation, review, presentation and revision of orientations for first-year and transfer students;Attend and represent CS at university advising seminars, trainings and open houses;Conduct graduation checks and transcript evaluations;Evaluate and provide recommendations for academic actions such as warnings or terminations; andDesign and edit advising materials.Administrative SupportMonitor schedule of the Associate Chair;Respond to general phone, e-mail and in-person questions of prospective and admitted students, and their families, and direct and distribute inquiries to appropriate faculty and staff;Provide general office clerical support as needed;Provide Undergraduate Accreditation Support;Record and summarize annual advising survey results; andReview faculty course outcome reports and summarize into annual learning outcome reports.Required Qualifications:Degree in Higher Education Administration; or a combination of education and experience;Prior experience using discretion and sound judgment in making independent decisions in resolving problems and issues quickly and efficiently;Prior experience communicating, participating, and performing in a team setting to maximize productivity and efficiency;Prior experience establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship and communicating appropriately with individuals of diverse social and ethnic backgrounds; andDemonstrated experience of basic word processing, spreadsheet, and data entry applications.Preferred Qualifications:Degree in Higher Education Administration;Experience in academic advising; andPrior experience working in an academic setting.A Force for Innovation in the Heart of Northern Virginia's Technology CorridorThe College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and a new School of Computing.
