Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a publicist to help the Communications team stay at the forefront of new and different ways to increase visibility of our brand, journalism and talent.

The ideal candidate has an expertise in promotion on or with emerging platforms, is passionate about the evolving media landscape and has a vision for expanded PR efforts that reach new audiences. This is an exciting opportunity to play an essential role in contributing to the future success and growth of the company.

In addition to the D.C. headquarters, candidates based in San Francisco or New York City, where The Post has office locations, are also encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Proactively develop platform-specific and strategic publicity plans for growing awareness of Post initiatives and journalism and see them through to successful completion.
  • Strengthen existing relationships with producers across topics on emerging platforms and grow new contacts for regular outreach to secure content citation and journalist interviews.
  • Identify trends and engage in cross-departmental collaboration to create new opportunities for storytelling about Next Generation team initiatives, audio, Lede Lab projects and other innovation.
  • Work in partnership with PR team members to amplify journalism, personalities and initiatives, thinking creatively about promotional opportunities.
  • Other writing and publicity duties and special projects as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree is required
  • 3+ years of related work experience.
  • Must be willing to work in D.C., NYC, or San Francisco office.
  • Knowledge of the media industry, marketplace, and competition.
  • Excellent news judgment, communication and interpersonal skills, including writing, proofreading and speaking.
  • Ability to establish rapport and develop credibility from colleagues and external business partners.
  • Enthusiastic team player who can thrive in a fast-paced news environment to meet deadlines.
  • Careful attention to detail with good follow-through.
  • Strategic and creative thinker who can adapt and prioritize moment to moment.
  • Dynamic self-starter with strong decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook, Cision or related journalist databases
