Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for two visual journalists to join its award-winning Graphics team as assignment editors. These editors will assign and edit projects, lead team members in conceiving and executing highly ambitious interactives and visualizations, and ensure that the work meets our standards. We are looking for journalists who are insatiably curious and want to share that curiosity with our audience.

Successful candidates for our two vacancies will thrive in a highly collaborative, deadline-driven, creative environment and can give and take feedback positively. Applicants should have demonstrated the ability to lead and inspire others. Additional qualifications include proficiency in graphics reporting, with a nuanced understanding of how to evaluate information sources, work with complex data and tell stories through meaningful visualization. Candidates should have a broad understanding of what producing graphics for a major news organization requires and be self-starters who can juggle more than one project at a time on deadline.

The ability to take advantage of unique approaches to visual storytelling along with an innate understanding of the power of graphics to communicate effectively in an increasingly visual media landscape is essential, as is proficiency in design programs, including Illustrator and Photoshop, and familiarity with front-end development and data analysis. This position will require some on-call weekend shifts.

These positions are based in our Washington newsroom and will not be eligible for remote work.

All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Graphics Director Chiqui Esteban and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
