Job Description
The Washington Post Personalization team is looking for a Lead Data Scientist who is excited to create forward-thinking solutions for the next generation of journalism. Our team is at the heart of the Post's machine learning strategies to build intelligent and adaptable personalized news experiences and business solutions capable of powering the most high-scale websites in the world. As the Lead Data Scientist, you will anticipate data and science-related bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate, and make trade-offs, and balance business needs versus scientific and technical constraints. Maturity, high judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence are essential to success in this role.

As the Lead Data Scientist, you will anticipate data and science-related bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate, and make trade-offs, and balance business needs versus scientific and technical constraints. Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional agile teams of data scientists, machine learning engineers, software engineers, and others to build machine learning infrastructure that best supports The Post's ML needs.
- Identify, scope, design and deliver ML feature pipelines.
- Apply machine learning technologies to build statistical models with large amounts of data and analyze that data to derive valuable insights and inform feature and product development.
- Drive and document best practices in ML systems and data engineering.
- Optimize pipelines and processes for model development, experimentation, and scaled production scoring.
- Deploy ML models under the constraints of scalability, correctness, and maintainability.
- Monitor and ensure the quality of machine learning solutions by implementing process and control disciplines as well as tooling to govern.
- Partner with stakeholders across the organization to identify business needs and align our data products with business goals.
- Actively identify and resolve strategic issues that may impair the team's ability to meet strategic, scientific, and technical goals
- Partner with research stakeholders to create, maintain, and prioritize the hypothesis and experimentation backlog.
- Mentor and train lower-level data scientists and machine learning engineers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field
- 8+ years of machine learning and data science experience
- 5+ years professional experience with Python
- Strong problem-solving ability and a knack for statistical analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years' experience with AWS
- 5+ years' experience with clustering, classification, sentiment analysis, time series, and deep learning
- Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance or related field
