Job Description
The Washington Post is looking for an editor to lead its service journalism strategy. This person will collaborate with editors in every section of our newsroom to identify and execute utility-focused stories that are actionable, engaging and accessible. This editor will also develop and manage strategies, processes and tools for The Post to publish service stories, build best practices for creating and updating evergreen content and help those stories find their intended audiences on our platforms and others. The service journalism editor will lead reporters and editors across The Post in developing ambitious and lasting resources that deepen readers' relationship with The Post and look for opportunities to leverage our extensive archives.
This role sits under The Post's Audience umbrella. The editor will collaborate with teams across the newsroom and company, such as SEO and Operations, Product, Social, Newsletters and Subscriber Engagement, to build our tools and processes for creating and distributing successful service stories and service products.

- Five-plus years of editing experience in a newsroom, with at least some period spent on utility-focused journalism or products, and a demonstrated ability to work with reporters and editors.
- Demonstrated experience using data to deliver insights and develop strategies for coverage, recirculation, optimization or reader experience.
- Strong editing skills and knowledge around what makes excellent service journalism, as well as best practices.
- Experience working with and driving relationships with non-newsroom teams, such as product, research and engineering.
- Experience using a wide variety of social platforms and tools such as Google Trends and Google Analytics to gauge reader needs or interests, and for distribution.
- Excellent communication skills, especially in translating data, trends, reader needs or best optimization practices to other journalists.
- A strong creative and problem-solving mindset.
- The ability to pivot between immediate opportunities and keeping a wide lens on long-term strategy and systems, and a track record of managing complex or extended projects.
- A deep interest in reaching new audiences, making journalism more accessible, experimenting to learn and helping The Post achieve its ambitious growth goals.
