Under the direction of the Editor in Chief and in collaboration with digital Executive Editors, the Executive Editor, Features helps shape AARP.org's editorial identity and content strategy. This position is responsible for directing all aspects of the development of features content assuring relevance to the diverse 50+ audiences. This position works diligently to generate high-impact content in innovative formats that are optimized for a digital audience. The Deputy Editor makes key day-to-day decisions on features coverage and creates daily lineups and schedules while also planning long-range projects and series and packages with rich media elements.


  • Directs the creation of authoritative and trustworthy content for digital platforms that appeals to the 50+ demographic and amplifies AARP's social mission.
  • Ensures that content is high-quality and adheres to publishing and digital best practices, enhances the user experience, and is presented in innovative and compelling ways.
  • Employs digital analytics tools and other resources to develop an in-depth understanding of the 50+ audience; analyzes content performance and identifies opportunities for sustainable growth of AARP's existing and emerging content platforms.
  • Oversees, guides, and manages a team of staff writers and editors; helps oversee the management of external content contributors.
  • Monitors major developments, news, and trends of interest to the 50+ audience and acts as a key decision-maker on content priorities.
  • Collaborates with and advises senior leadership and internal stakeholders to develop short- and long-term content strategies that help grow impact, relevance, and revenue.
  • Builds and maintains constructive and productive partnerships with AARP internal and external stakeholders; keeps abreast of new AARP initiatives, campaigns, programs, and research.


  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related discipline and 10+ years of digital publishing experience.
  • Proven management experience and excellent interpersonal, leadership, and collaborative skills; superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide editorial vision and direction for engaging presentations of all forms of digital content, including photo, audio, video, graphics and etc.
  • Exceptional editing and writing skills with a proven track record on a consumer-facing digital platform.
  • Strong knowledge of digital content creation, digital platforms and analytics, and SEO best practices.
  • Ability to utilize multiple information sources, analyze and identify trends, and develop successful editorial strategies.
  • Ability to work in matrix teams as a digital communications strategy expert.
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
