The Director, Finance oversees financial budgeting support for a business unit or department and is responsible for analyzing budgets with insight into needed business changes. This position manages the execution of contracts and ensures compliance with contract requirements. The Director serves as a liaison to management for monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements and collaborates with senior leadership to develop strategic financial operation plans to ensure continued successful growth and profitability.


  • Oversees the preparation, consolidation, and reporting on annual operating budgets and financial forecasts. Generates AARP Foundation's financial forecasts, annual budget, and multi-year financial plan driven by identifying key assumptions and dependencies.
  • Prepares financial reporting and presentations for the Board of Directors and other stakeholders
  • Directs and manages the preparation, consolidation, and reporting on revenues and expenditures.
  • Act as primary liaison with AARP Foundation Executive leadership including, but not limited to SVP/COO and President.
  • Manages financial operations staff, building and maintaining a high-performing team.
  • Interact with multiple levels of management and staff to communicate any issues, risks or opportunities related to revenue and operating expenses.
  • Provide guidance, direction and obtain end-user buy-in to continue to push ways to automate and streamline the budgeting and forecasting process and related reporting.
  • Review major contracts and other agreements, and is often required to work creatively and efficiently with the Office of General Counsel and other entities across AARP to develop financial/contractual solutions.


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline; MBA or Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of financial planning and analysis experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, organize, and manage staff and projects. Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Depth of understanding of non-profits, charitable fundraising, and ability to make sound financial business decisions based on that thorough understanding.
  • Strong analytical, communication, leadership and organizational skills.
  • Non-profit accounting preferred, and strong knowledge of GAAP accounting rules.
  • Adept at conveying complex financial concepts and analyses to non-financial management, staff, and executive leadership.
  • Dedicated to excellent customer service for internal and external customers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)
AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
