The Department of Environmental Services is seeking an experienced Trades Worker to work within the Solid Waste Bureau (SWB) on a team responsible for performing street can and litter collection, bus shelter repair and maintenance, and basic cleaning and landscaping functions.

The Solid Waste Bureau provides a wide array of services to the citizens of Arlington County. Some of the services provided are leaf and litter collection, trash & recycling, yard waste, and mulch & dirt.

Specific duties:

  • Performing litter control, bus shelter cleaning and graffiti removal using hand pressure washer, and vacuum collection methods;
  • Using a tablet and/or computer with various software to enter data, respond to service tickets, check email, and participate in meetings and trainings;
  • Operating a standard pickup truck with and without trailer and may operate a commercial rear loader trash truck for collecting street cans, and/or operating other specialized commercial vehicles; and
  • Reading a map and/or operating a GPS unit to navigate to various locations throughout Arlington County.
This employee will also perform other duties related to the overall mission and programs supported by the Operations section of the Solid Waste Division such as:

  • Assisting in other programs supported by the Operations section of Solid Waste Bureau and supporting County special events and activities;
  • Working during snow events and other emergencies;
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and daily service of the vehicles; and
  • Using a portable weighing scale for collection of daily data.

Selection Criteria
NOTE: This recruitment may be used to fill comparable vacancies within Arlington County.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Six months' experience performing general labor functions; and
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a valid CDL and experience in one or more of the following:

  • Operating a rear loader trash truck;
  • Conducting landscaping tasks;
  • Performing litter and street can collection;
  • Cleaning and maintaining tools and vehicles; and/or
  • Using computers and/or tablets to enter data.

Special Requirements

1) A valid driver's license is required. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

2) Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) as well as other special licensure or certifications may be required for individual positions depending on area of assignment.

3) For positions requiring CDL, the applicant must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employers information required by DOT agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information. Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug and/or alcohol screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.

4) Employee will be required to follow all applicable Federal, State, and County safety requirements when performing all duties.

5) Mandatory overtime may be required (depending on position) during leaf season to include 10-hour work days and up to 10 hours on Saturday, including during snow emergencies.

The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of sitting, bending, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment, weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee in this position performs duties in all weather- related situations.

A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
