Position Overview:

If so, the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) is hiring for the position of Intake Same Day Access/Adult Mental Health Outpatient Therapist. The main responsibility of this position is providing clinical evaluations and assessments through our Same Day Access process and individual and group psychotherapy to adults (18+) in our Mental Health Outpatient Program.

Examples of Duties:
  • Provides individual and group psychotherapy to adult clients, including those experiencing co-occurring disorders
  • Provides care coordination services
  • Conducts clinical assessments and evaluations and formulates diagnoses and treatment plans
  • Prepares reports for court proceedings, represents the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS), and testifies as an expert witness on behalf of clients
  • Initiates medical, psychiatric, and psychological evaluation referrals as needed
  • Participates in staff development
  • Maintains clinical records in an electronic health record (EHR) using Credible software, in accordance with state, city, departmental, and federal compliance requirements (i.e., collaborative and same day documentation)
  • Provides emergency and crisis intervention services when needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned


What we are looking for:

The ideal candidate has thorough knowledge and experience providing clinical assessments and diagnoses, individual and group treatment for behavioral health issues, including co-occurring disorders; can quickly build rapport and engage clients with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) and co-occurring disorders into treatment; is able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing with clients, other professionals and the public;

What you need to have (Minimum Qualifications):

Applicants have a current Commonwealth of Virginia license as an LCSW, Clinical Psychologist, or is license eligible (Licensed eligible is anyone that has completed all require education and supervision as required by applicable board). A license eligible applicant must obtain their Virginia license at the first available opportunity and no later than one year after appointment. The applicant will successfully complete a record/background check and has a good driving record. The individual must possess a valid driver’s license and is able to successfully complete a pre-employment background checks, including but not limited to:
  • FBI/Federal Records Check
  • VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry
  • Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database
  • Education, professional license and driver’s license verifications

What makes you a preferred candidate?

A currently Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia, at the time of appointment; is fluent in English and Spanish (written and verbal) and can conduct therapy in both languages.

Flexible Hybrid Schedule (On-site and Telehealth)

This is a full-time position (40-hours) Monday through Friday, 8:30AM - 5:00PM with some evening hour availability as needed to meet client needs.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Possession of Masters degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Education or related field; at least two years of post-graduate work experience in providing direct clinical services to consumers having one or more substance abuse, psychiatric, and emotional disorders; and licensure or license eligible (has completed all required education and supervision as required by applicable board) as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP) or Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of appointment; if license eligible, the employee must obtain Virginia licensure at the first available opportunity, but no later than one year after appointment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence if they are in a position with driving responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years post masters experience providing direct clinical services for substance abuse, and/or mental health issues; knowledge of mental health exam, and mental health classification/DSM-IV; at least one year of employment in a mental health community agency environment. Licensed as an LCSW or Clinical psychologist in Virginia at the time of appointment; bilingual in English / Spanish.
