Temporary Summer Program Assistant

Overview

In pursuit of service excellence the Temporary Summer Program Assistant (Recreation Leader III) provides an energetic camp environment, demonstrates joy of interacting with children while in safe and comforting environment. This position will be hands-on with developing, organizing, and managing recreation land and aquatic-based classes and camps. The position will provide exceptional customer service and foster a happy and engaged environment.

To succeed as a Program Assistant, you should be upbeat, decisive, and responsible while giving campers a fun, safe camp experience. You should also be organized and possess strong leadership skills. You will have the support of and work under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Manager II. The hours will vary Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm with specials events outside of standard business hours.

Program Assistant will:
  • Actively monitor campers in the pool, locker rooms, pool deck, and all areas campers might convene.
  • Assist in packing all materials and equipment at end of camp day and season.
  • Assist with registration, data management, and recordkeeping
  • Assist with the administration and clerical needs of the programs offered
  • Attend all staff trainings, staff meetings, and participant events and activities
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor, staff, and campers.
  • Work well independently as well as an active team member
  • Know how many participants are under the position’s care, know who and where they are at all times.
  • Learn and utilize database RecTrac.
  • Maintain summer camp participant information binder to include collecting forms, contacting parents, developing, and maintaining camper medication log.
  • Organize the set up and break down of necessary equipment and materials needed for instructional programs and activities.
  • Respond to customer questions and concerns in a positive and professional matter.
  • Safely escort children to and from activities
  • Support the Recreation Coordinator/ Recreation Manager in the planning and leading camp and class organizing
  • Visit program sites.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience as a Recreation Leader II, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of valid First Aid training and CPR.

Notes

This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.

The City of Alexandria requires employees to submit Covid-19 vaccination records or participate in weekly Covid-19 testing which is covered at the expense of the organization.
