Employment Opportunities - Summer 2022

Please read this entire announcement before submitting your application. This announcement is specific to the Creative Arts Camp Staff. If you are interested in other camp program areas, you must apply for that position as well.

Opportunities for temporary summer employment with the Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) include work as Camp Directors, Assistant Directors, and support staff (counselors) in camp programs throughout the County. Creative Arts Camp Counselors are needed to provide camp programs, plan, and lead a variety of art experiences for children ages 5-8, 8-11, or 12-16, depending on the camp.

Staff must commit from June 20 to August 12 (core camp dates). Training and planning beginning mid to late May through June, which includes a combination of independent and self-paced online courses with virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays. All camp staff will be trained to follow current guidelines (County specific protocols) related to COVID-19 safety. Several positions are available, and hours vary.

Applications are being accepted for the following positions:

STUDENT ASSISTANT (SA) I/II - $12.00/Hourly

Responsible for assisting all leaders in the summer camp or program activities and operations. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to be hired for licensed preschool camp, all other camps require the applicant be at least 15 years old.
Minimum requirements: Student Assistant I qualifications are non-high school graduates, who have worked one month at a summer camp OR with children (in any capacity) for 3 months. Student Assistant I I qualifications are high school graduates enrolled in post-high school education programs, who have accumulated no more than 3 months of relevant experience.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT (SRA) I -$15.00/Hour
Responsible for assisting with the leading of recreation activities and behavior management of participants for a summer camp. Assists in camp or program operations.
Minimum requirements: High School Diploma/GED, plus three (3) months experience in administering recreational programs.

SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT (SRA) II - $16.00/Hour
Responsible for assisting in the planning, leading, and conducting of recreation activities for a camp, behavior management of participants, and assisting in the evaluations of the activities and the participants.
Minimum requirements: H igh school/GED, plus six (6) months experience in administering recreational programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT (RA) III - $17.91/Hour
Responsible for planning, leading, and conducting recreation activities for a summer camp. Responsible for completing participant and program evaluations. Performs related supervisory and administrative duties.
Minimum requirements : High school/GED, plus one-year experience (equivalent of 4 summers) in administering recreation programs.

RECREATION ASSISTANT (RA) IV - $ 21.56 /Hour
Responsible for directing a summer camp with responsibility for all rooms in that program. Performs supervisory and administrative duties.
Minimum requirements : College degree in related field, plus one (1) year experience (equivalent of 4 summers) in administrating recreation programs. R elated experience may be substituted for the college requirement, on a year-for-year basis. Must be 21 years old at time of employment.

RECREATION INSTRUCTOR II for Teen Arts Camp Only (Assistant Director) -$23.38/Hour
Provides specialized instruction in ceramics, painting & drawing and/or mixed media for students ages 12-16. Responsible for developing curriculum, lesson plans and instruction of camp specialty. Performs administrative duties as needed.
Minimum Requirements: High school/GED, plus 800 hours of technical experience in a related field, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor. Technical experience may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation.

RECREATION INSTRUCTOR III for Teen Arts Camp Only (Director position)- $27.02/Hour
Provides specialized instruction in ceramics, painting & drawing, and/or mixed media for students ages 12-16. Responsible for directing a summer program including supervisory and administrative duties. Responsible for working with a team of leaders to develop curriculum, lesson plans and provide direct facilitation of camp subject matter.
Minimum Requirements: High school/GED, plus 12 00 hours of technical experience in a related field, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor. Technical experience may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation.

* Instructor Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

The successful candidates will have good character and integrity, positive communication skills, reliable transportation, the ability to complete tasks as assigned, take the initiative when needed, and the ability to work successfully in a team environment. Staff may be asked to work with individuals with disabilities.

Desirables:

  • Teaching experience in the arts and working with children;
  • Experience and/or willingness to work with individuals with disabilities; and
  • Experience with Summer Camp programs.

Special Requirements

If selected, all summer staff may be required to:

  • Agree to a criminal background check.
  • Candidates may be asked to provide letters of reference and/or supporting documentation to verify work/school experience prior to an offer of employment. Letters of reference may be attached to this application.
  • Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening.
  • Attend all required trainings.
  • Some positions require a valid motorized vehicle operator's license and driving history record checks.
  • Be open to provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Must be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for those positions serving in the capacity as Camp Director, with specialty camps, or other positions as designated.
