Graduate Student Life provides programming and support to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, academic success, career and professional development, well-being, and community building for Mason graduate students. A unit within the Division of University Life, Graduate Student Life collaborates extensively with the Graduate Education Office in the Office of the Provost and other partners to design and deliver programs and supports to address the needs of Mason's 10,000+ graduate students, with a particular focus on serving graduate students at the Fairfax Campus.About the Position: The Assistant Director of Graduate Student Life provides leadership and programming support to Graduate Student Life, focusing on engaging graduate students through programming and communications. The Assistant Director designs and delivers programs and coordinates services that address diversity and inclusion, well-being, and community-building for graduate students and will contribute to all other Graduate Student Life initiatives. In addition, the Assistant Director oversees communication about programs and services using web, social media, mailing lists/listservs, and other outlets and is responsible for overseeing the Mason Grad Insider blog. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director and other Graduate Student Life colleagues, the Graduate Education Office in the Office of the Provost, University Life units, and other partners. The Assistant Director will supervise the Graduate Professional Assistant for Graduate Student Engagement in Graduate Student Life. This position will be based at the Fairfax Campus, with occasional activities and events at Arlington and SciTech Campuses. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Graduate Student Life and is a member of the Graduate Student Life team within University Life. Responsibilities: Graduate Student Engagement and ProgrammingDesign, implement, coordinate, and assess programs and services that meet the unique needs of graduate students, with a focus on diversity and inclusion, well-being, and community-building. These programs and services should:Cultivate a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community for graduate students in collaboration with campus partners including but not limited to the Graduate Education Office in the Office of the Provost, the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA), Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment, First-Gen+ Center, LGBTQ+ Resources Center, Women and Gender Studies, Center for the Advancement of Well-Being, Counseling and Psychological Services, Learning Services, Student Involvement, Mason Recreation, and University Libraries;Advance antiracism, inclusion, and equity for graduate students; Promote well-being and mental health for graduate students; Contribute to planning, coordinating, and supporting all other Graduate Student Life initiatives, programs, and events;Utilize data and best practices to inform program planning, service delivery, and decision-making; andCollaborate with University Life partners to engage graduate and professional students at regional campuses. Engagement through CommunicationsOversee and manage all communications and promotions for Graduate Student Life, including website, mailing lists, social media, Mason Grad Insider blog, and marketing;Serve as administrator for Graduate Student Life website and shared webpages on the Graduate Education website;Liaise with University Life Marketing and Communications for graphic design, marketing, and communications support; andAssess effectiveness of communications efforts on ongoing basis using key performance indicators. Graduate Student SupportUnderstand and assess needs of graduate students. Connect graduate students with relevant University Life, campus, and external resources for support;Collaborate with partners in University Life, the Graduate Education Office in the Office of the Provost, academic units, and other units to address needs and concerns of graduate students and to advance division- and institution-wide commitment for graduate student support; andServe as a resource for graduate students and graduate student organizations. Administration, Management, and SupervisionSupervise Graduate Professional Assistant for Graduate Student Engagement;Manage budget and purchasing related to programming, communications, and service delivery;Assist in strategic planning for Graduate Student Life;Support divisional and institution-wide strategic efforts; andOther duties as assigned.Required Qualifications:Earned master's degree by time of hire or equivalent combination of education and experience;One year of full-time professional experience in higher education setting (or equivalent graduate assistant or post-bachelor's part-time experience);Understanding of the unique needs of graduate students across disciplines and degree levels;Demonstrated ability to engage with and support a diverse student population;Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education;Experience designing, implementing, coordinating, and assessing programs, events, and services to meet student needs and interests and to promote student learning and development;Experience with assessment and using data to inform program planning, service delivery, and decision-making;Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; initiative; and integrity; andFacility with using online tools, including website content management systems, email, social media, and video, to deliver programs and services.Preferred Qualifications:Experience designing and delivering programs for and supporting graduate and/or professional students;Knowledge of best practices and experience with developing and delivering diversity, equity, and inclusion programming;Knowledge of best practices and experience with developing and delivering well-being programming; andExperience advising students and student organizations and supervising staff (particularly student and/or paraprofessional staff) with a developmental perspective.The anticipated start date for this position will be July 1, 2022.
