Deputy Director, Advocacy and Community Relations The National Job Corps Association (NJCA) is seeking a Deputy Director of Advocacy and Community Relations to join its small, dynamic team. In this capacity, the Deputy Director of Advocacy and Community Relations will help lead government relations outreach and communications activities on behalf one of the nation's principal advocacy organizations for socioeconomically disadvantaged young people.This role is based in Washington, DC, and staff will have the ability to work remotely in the Washington metropolitan area.About the National Job Corps Association Created by Congress in 1964 as a vanguard in the War on Poverty, Job Corps is the nation's largest residential, education and job training program for socioeconomically disadvantaged youth. It provides housing, basic healthcare, meals, social and emotional development, and career preparation at 121 active Job Corps campuses in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Job Corps has the capacity to annually help 60,000 students transition into employment, higher education, or the military.The NJCA represents tens of thousands of Job Corps students as well as the youth service providers and community and employer partners at Job Corps campuses nationwide. The NJCA serves as the voice of the Job Corps community in Washington, DC, and beyond, advocating to Congress, the US Department of Labor, and the White House to advance the Job Corps mission and support the program's students, staff, and communities.About the Position The Deputy Director of Advocacy and Community Relations will play a lead role in the NJCA's advocacy and communication activities. They will be responsible for conducting outreach to both the US House of Representatives and US Senate to educate them about Job Corps and its most pressing issues and opportunities. They will also direct the Association's communications efforts and find new avenues to promote the Job Corps program and NJCA membership. In addition, they will be involved in managing the grassroots advocacy and community engagement activities of Job Corps campuses nationwide, facilitating policymaker tours of Job Corps campuses, and assisting the organization and execution of events and professional development opportunities for Job Corps staff.The ideal candidate will be driven by our mission to improve the lives of the young people Job Corps serves, capable of working autonomously as part of a small team, and adaptable in an environment of shifting policy, political, and operational priorities. This person will be a skilled writer, editor, and spoken communicator, familiar with communications strategies on different social media platforms, organized, and a task-oriented manager.Responsibilities Advocacy/Government RelationsEducate congressional staff regarding Job Corps' policy and funding prioritiesExpand the membership of the 90+ Friends of Job Corps Congressional Caucus in the US House of RepresentativesHelp to manage the grassroots advocacy efforts of Job Corps campus staff nationwide including activity tracking, technical assistance and staff training, and annual awards and recognitionTrack and report on relevant hearings and legislationDraft NJCA membership alerts, updates, and communications about relevant congressional activitiesCommunity Relations/CommunicationsDirect the NJCA's social and digital media managementDraft and distribute media and press releases for notable developmentsManage the development and distribution of the NJCA's biweekly newsletters and membership communicationsDraft briefing materials, one-pagers, and internal and external documents on relevant policy developments as neededManage and lead the NJCA Communications Committee including drafting agenda, distributing materials, directing action items, and managing quarterly virtual meetingsEvent SupportAssist the Director of Operations in the organization of in-person and virtual professional development opportunities for Job Corps staff nationwideProvide support for the NJCA's two annual in-person conferencesNonprofit AdministrationSupport the NJCA Board of Directors, committees, and membership calls and meetings as neededSupport administrative and operations projects as neededQualifications Bachelor's Degree3-5 years of related work experience, preferably advocacy or communications experience on Capitol Hill and/or experience working with disadvantaged youthPassion for the mission of helping lift young people out of povertyJob Type: Full-timePay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per yearBenefits:401(k)Dental insuranceFlexible scheduleHealth insurancePaid time offVision insuranceSchedule:Monday to FridayCOVID-19 considerations:Staff are required to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 and must provide proof of vaccination prior to employment.Ability to commute/relocate:Washington, DC: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)Education:Bachelor's (Preferred)Experience:advocacy or communications: 3 years (Preferred)Work Location: One location
