The Fairfax County Department of Planning & Development seeks an enthusiastic GIS professional that is passionate about leveraging spatial analysis, tools, and technologies to help manage and improve the agency’s mission. “To promote livable communities which enhance the quality of life for the present and the future”. Serves as an innovative team member in the Information Technology division of the department. The position’s major areas of concentration are on cartography, graphic design, maintenance of enterprise geo-database datasets, and ability to diagnose software and hardware problems.

This position will be responsible for:
  • Implementing spatial analysis projects to meet agency strategic goals related to planning and development initiatives.
  • Maintain enterprise level GIS data and be able to apply that to map production, map analysis, queries, reports, and web GIS.
  • Create, build, maintain GIS data sets to support customized queries, reports from valuable data sources.
  • Regularly meet with agency GIS users to offer guidance on the use of GIS to help users grow their GIS awareness and maximize their use of GIS technologies and solutions.
  • Follow standards, ensure all departmental information is customer-access friendly, aesthetically pleasing, comports with professional standards, and is accurately represented.
  • Assist in website development, content management using Drupal, an open-source web content management system.

Bachelor's degree in computer science, geography or related field,; plus one year of experience working with and developing systems utilizing GIS platforms such as ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop or Server software suites; or performing GIS modeling (e.g., feature classes), and spatial analysis (e.g., such as proximity analysis, image analysis, routing analysis).

The appointee is required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

  • Ability to manage various projects and varied customer requests while demonstrating excellent customer service and teamwork demeanor with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate technical information and concepts to staff at all levels
  • Experience with Desktop GIS (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcCatalog) including related extensions (Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst) and Esri geodatabases (File, Enterprise), and Web GIS (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, Portal, Server) including creating GIS web applications through tools such as Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS
  • Experience developing and designing GIS datasets including geodatabase schema, structure, and documentation
  • Research, develop, configure databases for spatial analysis and reporting. Ability to perform maintenance, modify, configure, and automate processes to the databases as necessary.
  • Knowledge of scripting & automation techniques in GIS (Python, SQL, and Model Builder)
  • Experience using ArcGIS, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Illustrator, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience or ability to learn evolving dashboard publishing software (ESRI’s dashboard, Microsoft Power BI, etc.)
  • Experience building, creating, and maintaining web pages and content.
  • Ability creating, maintaining, and supporting county GIS end-user environments

Work is based in a standard office environment using standard office i equipment. Must be able to enter and retrieve data using a computer i keyboard and must be able to make verbal and written presentations. All duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
