This Infrastructure Support Engineer position will work within the Office of Information Technology in support of WMATA's Rail Operations Center and constituent IT systems and services and will report to the Deputy Chief of ITIO-DCI. The incumbent will provide critical technical and administrative support for key IT software, systems and services. The incumbent will ensure the continuity of operations of all such IT systems and will be required to effectively assess and evaluate service affecting incidents and implement developed resolution procedures. The incumbent will also ensure required coordination of assigned duties with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure sufficient engagement and availability of resources as applicable, and that all duties are executed in accordance with established WMATA policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or Engineering.
    • In lieu of degree a high school diploma or GED and four years of relevant progressively responsible experience in implementing, maintaining and fine-tuning infrastructure integration processes in a large-scale enterprise environment, with hands-on experience with LAN/WAN infrastructures and maintaining and troubleshooting the interoperability of systems and components in complex network architecture.

Experience
  • Four (4) years of experience in infrastructure integration engineering in a large-scale enterprise environment. This must include three (3) years of hands-on experience with LAN/WAN infrastructures and maintaining and troubleshooting the interoperability of systems and components in complex network architecture.

Preferred

Certification/Licensure
  • IT certifications are desirable, e.g., MCSE, CCNA, ITIL, IBM Certified Systems Expert.
  • CISSP
  • CISA

Summary

The Infrastructure Support Engineer is a highly technical professional role responsible for using computer networking, enterprise application integration, business process management and manual programming to ensure the seamless interconnection of software systems and physical components in the WMATA wide area network (WAN). The incumbent designs, maintains and optimizes Active Directory Infrastructure and the inter-relationships among software systems and physical components to ensure network elements function efficiently as a consolidated whole; interconnects actual and virtual systems to establish cloud services; maintains standard hardware configurations that can be replicated throughout the network; contributes to procedures for converging multiple systems and devices. The Engineer spans critical business processes across multiple network applications and devices to ensure optimal data sharing throughout the enterprise; eliminates unnecessary silo architectures to realize greater financial savings for the organization and return on investment (ROI). The incumbent maintains functional knowledge of the latest infrastructure integration trends, concepts, practices, and procedures to enable incumbent to infuse the network with the latest technology advances.

Essential Functions
    • Manages the inter-relationships among complex hardware and software systems and configurations in the entire enterprise network (physical, virtual and cloud systems).
    • Uses automated and hands-on methods to increase the capacity, functionality and efficiency of enterprise network elements and services.
    • Analyses, designs and implements highly complex solutions across the infrastructure to optimize hardware, software, storage, virtualization and business services.
    • Works closely with management and technical groups to establish and/or modify inter-relationships among enterprise network elements and services to deliver infrastructure solutions that are cost effective, supportable and high-performing.
    • Uses computer networking, enterprise application integration, business process management and manual programming to ensure the seamless interconnection of software systems and physical components.
    • Designs, maintains and optimizes the inter-relationships among software systems and physical components to ensure network elements function efficiently as a consolidated whole.
    • Interconnects actual and virtual systems to establish cloud services.
    • Maintains standard hardware configurations that can be replicated throughout the network.
    • Contributes to policy and procedure development for converging multiple systems and devices.
    • Spans critical business processes across multiple network applications and devices to ensure optimal data sharing throughout the enterprise.
    • Eliminates unnecessary silo architectures to realize greater financial savings and ROI.
    • Reviews technical and management data to understand critical infrastructure details and design end-to-end infrastructure solutions.
    • Administers, designs and configures applicaions, services and tools (SCCM, SCOM, DPM, Echange, File and print, SQL datbases, Activit directory, ADFS,ADLDS, DNS,DFS, DHCP, WINS, VDI, WMWAE, PI, Office365, Microsoft Teams, Auditing, Backup Software)
    • Creates and maintains of system design and configuration documentation.
    • Develops as-built and system architecture documents.
    • Assesses and Troubleshoots systems for OS/Application vulnerability and cybersecurity threats (malware etc.).
    • Developes threat mitigation and remediation plans; provides input into system maintenance and patch management strategy in accordance with stated safety and policy directives.
    • Implements future infrastructure systems and services by using various tools and applications.
    • Integrates and supports hybrid on-premises/cloud-based systems and platforms
    • Leads technical teams and facilitates interaction among team members and vendors to achieve business and technology goals.
    • Coordinates the evaluations of infrastructure integration vendors and products and documents group assessments and recommendations
    • Develops long-term technology and architectural roadmaps for improving and maintaining a highly integrated and efficient infrastructure.
    • Designs and implements logical and physical architectures across the enterprise to ensure all network elements function as a whole while eliminating risks to network security.
    • Develops standards for integrating physical, virtual and cloud technologies.
    • Makes recommendations to management for optimizing network resources and avoiding conflicts in network processes


    OTHER FUNCTIONS

    • Technical support, diagnosis and troubleshooting of personal computer systems and accessories - hardware/software integration
