Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an assistant editor to help drive and edit timely, memorable and affecting visual storytelling off the news, a key area of coverage expansion. This editor will report to and partner with the senior editor for visual enterprise to identify opportunities for fresh visual approaches to news, pull together teams from multiple desks, and offer vision and guidance as we invent story forms. The role will include working with visual editors on other teams to convene and coordinate coverage. Excellent editorial and visual judgment are essential; competitive zeal is key, as are a high metabolism and a passion for breaking news.

We're looking for an editor with these qualities:

• You are brimming with story ideas daily and can help colleagues shape and refine their ideas.

• You are as eager to publish quick-turn projects as you are longer enterprise.

• You have experience in creating and editing visuals and text into an integrated story and are a concise, vivid writer.

• You relish experimentation and innovation.

• You love collaborating with colleagues and enjoy teaching others new skills and learning from them in turn.

Some examples of the kind of stories we want you to develop:

• Dispatches on omicron from around the world

• Along the Midwest tornado path

• ‘People will always come': Inside a Haitian's journey without end

• Where victims and survivors lived in the Surfside condo collapse

• Together. Again.

Candidates should have three to five years of experience in a newsroom. A strong background in visual reporting and experience in editing video, photo, graphics or design is preferred, but we welcome applications from journalists with backgrounds in audience and project management.

This position, which is part of a major expansion of our editing ranks, is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, the position will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three examples of outstanding, integrated multimedia work to our jobs portal by Feb. 18. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Senior Editor for Visual Enterprise Ann Gerhart.
