Position Information
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has two (2) vacancies for Trades Workers within the Landscape Unit, and in the Park Service Area section in the Parks and Natural Resources Division. The Trades Worker in the Landscape Unit will work as a team member assisting gardeners in performing horticultural and gardening duties at County-owned parks, streetscapes, gardens, facility grounds, and other landscaped public areas. The Trades Worker in the Park Service Area Section will work as a team member within a specified geographic neighborhood service area to perform park maintenance functions such as refuse collection, basic horticultural functions, park maintenance, and enhancement projects.

Landscape Unit position specific duties:

  • Planting, mulching, weeding, and pruning of landscape areas;
  • Performing general maintenance of landscape areas and small trees;
  • Assisting in greenhouse and nursery operations;
  • Performing routine watering of trees and landscaping areas;
  • Using hand and power tools; and
  • Operating various vehicles including pickup trucks and trucks requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Park Service Area Section position specific duties:

  • Using hand and power tools;
  • Driving tractors and trucks, including pickups, dump trucks and refuse trucks;
  • Cleaning rest rooms and picnic shelters;
  • Repairing park equipment;
  • Collecting refuse and hauling materials; and
  • Reporting and recording completed work data into work order system using tablet.
These employees will interact on a regular basis with park users and during the winter months assists with snow removal. Work is conducted in a team environment and employees will periodically provide leadership to other trades workers for small projects, special assignments, maintenance and weather emergencies.

Selection Criteria
NOTE: This recruitment may be used to fill comparable vacancies within Arlington County.

Minimum: Six months' experience performing general labor duties. See Special Requirements section for required license information.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Performing general grounds maintenance, landscaping, tree planting and similar horticultural experience;
  • Operating dump trucks, pick-up trucks, refuse trucks, trailers and CDL vehicles;
  • Providing training in general labor duties to other team members;
  • Providing information to the public;
  • Cleaning and maintaining tools and vehicles; and/or
  • Applying pesticides and/or possession of valid Pesticide License or Registered Technician License.

Special Requirements
1) Applicant must possess or obtain within nine months of appointment to this position, a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Any employee hired without this license will be appointed as a trainee, until the license is obtained.

2) The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

3) Prior to appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening, and will be subject to random drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.

4) A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Working Conditions: Employees are required to follow all applicable federal, state, and county safety requirements when performing all duties.

  • Employees perform activities inside and outside.
  • Employee is subject to cold (below 32 degrees) for periods of more than one hour and/or temperatures above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as snow, rain, hail, wind and humidity.
  • Employee is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • Employee is subject to one more of the following conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation, oils, and other cutting fluids.
Physical Requirements :

  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
