Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or possession of a general equivalency diploma (GED)

  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in the preventive maintenance and/or daily automotive servicing

  • A valid Commercial driver's license with air brake and passenger endorsements issued from jurisdiction of residence

  • Successful completion of a vocational training program in vehicle maintenance or a related program

Mission Essential Designation
  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.


The Service Lane Supervisor is responsible for vehicle maintenance oversight and direction to subordinates tasked with inspecting vehicles for defects, needed repairs, monitoring fluid levels and assuring adherence to industry and Authority safety regulations and guidelines. The incumbent is charged with carrying out the required duties and responsibilities in Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s bus garage facilities or other areas deemed appropriate.

Essential Functions
  • Oversight for bus maintenance garage functions.
  • Inspects vehicle system (i.e., cameras and other applicable systems) and equipment periodically to identify potential safety hazards.
  • Implements immediate corrective measures to assure safe and proper operation of WMATA's fleet.
  • Oversees the dispatch of roadside assistance to repair or recover disabled vehicles as necessary.
  • Provides guidance (via adherence to safety measures) to include work station standards of care and safety. Conducts checks to ensure a safe and hazard free work place. Ensures the proper operation of vehicles and fuel allocation by conducting regular shift (day, evening, night) inspections consistently for safety compliance.
  • Maintains log of serviced vehicle and component repairs, accidents, injuries, and other hazardous occurrences necessary to evaluate and forecast most frequently reported or discovered defects and required repairs.
  • Analyzes and evaluates actual fuel usage measured against estimated usage to inform budgetary input, waste and noncompliance and report reconciliation. These areas influence the decision-making process.
  • Communicates the policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines to staff both orally and in writing via performance reviews. Executes the administrative and supervisory function of payroll, time keeping and attendance. investigates complaints and conflicts, implementing quick and feasible resolutions.
