Job Description

The Washington Post's FP&A department is seeking a uniquely qualified individual with both finance and operations experience. This role requires the standard modeling and analytics skillset, leadership, and a sense of creativity and curiosity in the constantly evolving operations of a digital media business.

The purchase of The Washington Post by Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos has propelled the company into the elite set of US digital publishers. Along with the robust investment and record-breaking growth in digital revenue and traffic comes the responsibility of guiding the company's resources into complete optimization to reach both strategic and financial objectives. You will be part of a team charged with this task; using data driven analytics combined with comprehensive judgment to advise both short- and long-term planning.

The FP&A team is comprised of subject matter experts of different departments and revenue streams. You will manage the analytics and reporting of our newsroom operations. The ability to understand and communicate financial risks and opportunities at all times is imperative. You will use your subjective intelligence, client relationships, and leadership skills to build trust to serve the financial needs of the overall organization.

  • Provide strategic support and analysis for executive editor and managing editors by delivering and communicating monthly expense reporting through multiple data portals, leading annual newsroom budget preparation, evaluating prior investments for ROI and business impact, and evaluating necessary support costs for new investments. Conduct special projects, analyses, and ad hoc reporting as needed.
  • Manage the domestic and international newsroom budget processes by conducting monthly close accrual reviews, reviewing and approving newsroom invoices, managing billing vendor relationship and analyzing and evaluating contractual terms for all vendors and consolidate contracts where possible, and
  • Establish independent contracts for new and existing contractors and send out for signature
  • Research finance trends in the news industry and communicate potential enhancements to the newsroom and business partners.
  • Collaborate with FP&A and Accounting teams by providing information and reporting to support budgeting and forecasting responsibilities, analyzing and documenting proper GAAP account interpretations, and preparing accounting entries and reconciliations related to expense and banking transactions.
  • Provide supporting documentation for internal, external, and other ad-hoc audit requests for areas of responsibility.
  • Identify areas for process improvements, including leveraging technological solutions to improve efficiency and assist in the implementation of robotic processing automation.
  • Maintain and update internal process documentation for existing accounting procedures and policies.
  • Support general ledger accounting functions including but not limited to journal entry preparation, month-end close processes, financial reporting accuracy, GL account reconciliations, and flux analysis of balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Manage direct reports by guiding and supporting career development and performance.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7+ years of accounting or finance experience
  • Management experience preferred
  • A demonstrated understanding of accounting and financial concepts
  • Strong Excel skills required
  • Knowledge of Hyperion plus
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Detail-oriented with demonstrated initiative in research and follow-through
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
