Job Description

The Director of Payroll will lead our payroll team in delivering strategic and operational solutions to our end-to-end payroll process. This position will play a crucial role in further establishing and scaling our growing global payroll operations and supporting our overall organizational growth. This role will be responsible for implementing payroll processing in new countries in alignment with The Post's strategic plans, establishing policies and to foster continuous evolution of operational processes. The Director of Payroll will be responsible for building and managing a team that is driven by servicing and creating a world class experience for employees. This role will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Finance, Human Resources, News and Legal teams, and act as an escalation point for payroll-related matters. The Washington Post is a multi-union, multi-state processor for 2400 employees with monthly and biweekly payrolls. We process monthly payrolls in 12 countries using in-country vendors.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all US biweekly and monthly payrolls in addition to 12 monthly international payrolls. Support our global expansion initiatives in project management of global payroll system and service implementations to ensure alignment across other upstream and downstream systems.
  • Manage the global payroll vendor contracts and performance. Prepares international payrolls and ensure payment and taxes are completed timely and in compliance.
  • Lead the day-to-day US payroll operations and team, including payroll approvals and commitments. The payroll team consists of team of a Payroll Manager and two Senior Specialists. Coach, mentor and develop this team of employees.
  • Identify and strategically plan for sustainable payroll system enhancements to drive efficiency, productivity, and quality. Develop and execute "best in class" payroll strategy for accuracy and compliance.
  • Collaborate across departments, such as HR and with Payroll Partners within each of the departments to achieve the confidence and trust from our employees on their pay. As the primary liaison maintains relationship with these key partners.
  • Direct all payroll related requirements and processes for the Workday system. Coordinate updates and issues with HRIS and systems integration.
  • Ensure that all process documentation is complete, accurate and updated on a regular basis to reflect process improvements or changes.
  • Support, respond to, assist, and collaborate with internal and external auditors on all payroll operations.
  • Create a work environment that promotes teamwork, performance feedback, recognition, mutual respect and compliance with company, department, and legal requirements.

Requirements:
  • 10+ years of payroll processing experience including international payroll processing.
  • 5+ years supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience with Workday and ADP.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) desired

  • Experience implementing payroll in new countries.
  • Must be able to stay cool, calm, and effective in a high-stress environment.
