Duties

The Dialysis/Renal RN is accountable to the Nurse Manager of the Dialysis/Renal Clinic and falls under the Ambulatory/Specialty Care Nursing Service. Refer to the service Organizational Chart for supervisory chain of command and the location of the position. The Nurse Manager of the Dialysis/Renal Clinic is the immediate supervisor who provides administrative and clinical supervision and general instruction, plans, and assigns work, assigns time schedules, approves leave, and completes performance evaluations.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advance Life Support (ALS) are required. The Dialysis/Renal RN will be self-directed in completing orientation and on-going mandatory education. Will actively participate in competency assessment and validation.

He/she assures that the health care system's reprocessing of all MRE is performed according to the concepts associated with a High Reliability Organization (HRO) and demonstrating and maintaining full competency in the use, pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical equipment. The employee must ensure that the appropriate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and manufacturers' instructions are followed for any step in the use of RME (pre-cleaning, reprocessing, disinfection, sterilization, maintenance) in which he/she is involved.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
  • Guides peers in the application of critical thinking and process improvement to improve patient care.
  • Uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote peer involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Systematically evaluates current practice and formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within area of expertise.
  • Guides, develops and supports peers from a leadership perspective.
  • Uses professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs/service activities.
  • Promotes excellence in customer service, internal/external, by incorporating the VHA ICARE core values (I Care: Integrity, Commitment Advocacy, Respect Excellence) into daily practice.
  • Demonstrates leadership in patient advocacy, in protecting the health, safety, and rights of patients.
  • Maintains professional boundaries with patients, families, and employees. Behavior as a role model is transparent and above reproach.
  • Treats all patients and families with dignity and respect. Listens to and honors patient and family perspectives and choices. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/02/2022.Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years Renal/Dialysis experience
  • Current BLS/ACLS
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: The Dialysis/Renal RN is required to meet the physical standards as outlined on the OF 178 Certificate of Medical Examination. The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. The position requires long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. The Dialysis/Renal RN may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and is required to don protective clothing/equipment in isolation situations or with daily operations. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
