SOME Inc. exists to help the homeless and poor of Washington, DC. We strive to provide success paths toward mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, and employment with a living wage, affordable housing, and ultimately living independently and confidently.SOME Inc. is currently seeking a full-time Cook for the Emergency Services department.Position Description: The Cook will prepare daily meals for breakfast, lunch, and the meals for delivery to our programs. The Cook will maintain responsibility for kitchen operations and food inventory.Schedule: Sunday-Thursday; 6:30am - 3:00 pm (40 hours per week)Qualifications: Required: HS Diploma or GED; 1-3 yrs. food service or restaurant experience.Preferred: Culinary Arts Degree; 3 + yrs. institutional food service or restaurant experience, Driver's LicenseRequired License/Certification: Food Handler's License by the District of Columbia Department of HealthKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of kitchen operations and food preparation techniquesKnowledge of food safetyAbility to work in a team environmentAbility to communicate effectivelyTime management skills with the ability to prioritizeCustomer service skills to interact with volunteers and coworkersAbility to read and understand menus and recipesAble to utilize kitchen equipment and toolsAbility to follow directionsAction-orientedFlexibility with the ability to multi-task despite competing prioritiesOrganized with an attention to detailExpected Contributions: Meal Preparation: Develop weekly menu and plan breakfast and lunch with selections that are balanced and nutritious. Plan economical use of resources and meal portion size. Track and plan food budget. Adjust menus based on donations. Ensure meals are ready each day for delivery to programs.Organization: Clean and maintain kitchen. Organize and maintain food inventory. Label meals for serving and delivery. File invoices from deliveries. Record daily logs for food, refrigeration, temperature of foods, etc.Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
