Job SummaryPerforms a variety of patient care, technical and clerical support functions for the Infectious Diseases Department. Collects and organizes specimens for designated research studies (both clinical and laboratory) under the supervision of the Director.Minimum QualificationsEducation/TrainingHigh School Diploma or GED equivalent; College degree preferred. Completion of a Nursing Assistant Training program or Medical Assistant Training Program preferred. CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO AN APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE.Experience1 year experience in a medical/health care setting is preferred.License/Certification/RegistrationBLS required.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of computers/databases. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments, as directed. Skill in taking vital signs, maintaining records and recording results. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to read, understand, and respond to detailed oral or written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly. Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesContributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Obtains vital signs, height, weight, phlebotomy, inserts peripheral IV's (as directed by Physician/NP/RN), and transcribes to appropriate flow sheets.Reports information, findings and urgent patient issues to appropriate personnel in an appropriate time frame.Assists Physician, Nurse Practitioner and RN during procedures including, but not limited to: monitoring vital signs pre/post and during treatments.Sets up and breaks down equipment and trays used during procedures, and processes paperwork, labels, processes and delivers (ships) specimens to appropriate laboratories. Enters lab orders in computer system to generate appropriate labels.Follows specific research protocols in obtaining and processing of patient samples from clinical research patients. Ensures samples are processed correctly and shipped to correct destination in a timely manner according to protocol.Obtains and prepares cells for culture as needed. Counts and tissue plates cells utilizing sterile technique. Ensures that samples are sent to correct lab and prepared for specific experiments.Prepares medium, reagents, etc.Enters sample information into database according to protocol. Analyzes and processes data as needed.Attends initiation meetings for pharmaceutical and in-house studies.Inventories, stocks and obtains supplies for the clinical area. Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe job environment in the clinical area. Obtains lab specimens as directed.Maintains an updated list of scheduled patients for each day, and reviews schedule with supervisor on a daily basis.Screens and triages incoming telephone calls courteously and professionally, answering routine questions and/or taking/referring messages to the appropriate staff.Greets all patients/visitors to the clinic/unit and assists them with completion of paperwork, as needed.Maintains the patient sign-in log, assigns patient rooms/treatment areas (in collaboration with nursing/medical staff and assists in ensuring a seamless clinic patient flow. Assists in meeting patient comfort and hygiene needs.Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.Performs other duties as assigned.
