ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR

Duties

Serves as a member of the faculty supporting the mission and academic programs of ES and NDU through teaching and seminar instruction, curriculum scholarship and research, service to the college and university, and engagement with external stakeholders. Promotes a climate that fosters respect among students, faculty, staff, and administration from a range of diverse backgrounds, ideas, and perspectives. The primary functions are described below:

Teaching and Seminar Instruction

• Prepares and conducts graduate-level seminar instruction in the interdisciplinary
• Reviews course structure, theoretical frameworks, and reading materials, participates in faculty preparation sessions, and prepares personal lesson plans for core courses assigned to teach.
• Applies teaching methods that stimulate student engagement through faculty-facilitated seminar discussion and experiential learning.
• Facilitates student understanding of the relevance and application of theoretical frameworks and concepts to practical problems affecting national security and resourcing decisions.
• Mentors students to enhance their seminar performance, optimize their ES experience, and prepare them for future roles in their professional career.

Curriculum Scholarship and Research

• Participates in the planning, development, upgrade, integration and continuous improvement of the ES program, curriculum, and courses.
• In addition to the core ES academic program, develops courses and lessons that support seminar instruction in the NDU-wide electives and other NDU programs.
• As required, assists Industry Study Leads and Course Directors in lesson development, preparing syllabus sheets, lesson plans, and faculty preparation packages.
• Supports the integration of assigned core courses and industry studies with other portions of the ES curriculum.
• As applicable, conducts research on topics relevant to the analysis of the national innovation base and (defense) industrial base and their underlying globalized bases.
• Serves as consultant and adviser to the President, National Defense University, the Commandant, and faculty members, in applying practical experience to current knowledge and research.

Service to ES and NDU

• Performs recurring roles that directly support delivery of the ES academic program each academic year.
• Leads or supports multidisciplinary capstone exercises.
• Mentors, counsels, and advises several students in role of primary faculty advisor, supporting their orientation to the school, providing feedback on their initial writing assignment, serving as their liaison/advocate with school administration, and providing input on their year-end student assessment.
• Serves as research adviser to individual students and student groups performing research on topics of academic interest relevant to national security decision making, other aspects of national security strategy, and the government-industry nexus.
• As required, assumes rotational curriculum leadership and administrative roles supporting the ES mission, such as Industry Study Lead or Core Course Director, Director of Research, Deputy Chair or Chair of an academic department.
• Leads or participates in college or university-wide committees related to such areas as strategic planning, accreditation, admissions, etc.
• Advises leaders, faculty, and staff colleagues in areas of expertise.

Engagement and Outreach

• Participates in outreach activities in furtherance of the mission of the ES and NDU. Advises and consults with senior DOD officials involved in the policy-making process.
• Maintains professional relationships with ES and NDU stakeholders, and robustly develops professional relationships and standing, domestically and internationally, with senior educators, business leaders, industrialists, and public officials in the fields of the ES program to enlist their services in reinforcing the quality of instruction and to stay abreast of new developments in the fields relevant to the ES curriculum. Maintains standing in professional organizations/associations applicable to the ES mission.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in a discipline or focus area relevant to the ES academic program, such as business, finance, economics, international relations, supply chain management, technology and innovation, political economy, business strategy, industrial and organizational analysis, or similar disciplines/focus areas. Eligibility for Associate Professor or Professor academic ranks requires a doctorate or terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education ( or international equivalent) in a discipline relevant to national security.

Substantial experience teaching in a discipline related to national security, strategic resourcing, supply chain management, technology and innovation, industrial organization, industry analysis, or business strategy at an accredited higher education institution. Demonstrated ability to teach a wide range of topics in an interdisciplinary educational program.

Sustained record of curriculum scholarship and research, to include curriculum development and collaborative contributions in developing and delivering educational programs as well as research published to advance the state of knowledge in areas related to the ES academic program.

Significant experience in faculty mentorship and development, curriculum leadership, academic administration, or similar roles in higher educational institutions or executive education programs.

Sustained record of developing or advancing institutional or academic community partnerships, relationships that leverage cross-component mission success, or networks that influence public policy or the study of national security, strategic resource allocation, and defense industries.

Desired Qualifications

Experience analyzing the U.S. national innovation base and (defense) industrial base and their potential contributions to national security, to include study of firms, markets, industry institutions, and government regulation of industry.

Experience with Defense resourcing and industrial mobilization; Defense acquisition, logistics, and supply chain management; industry analysis; economics; strategic leadership.

Knowledge related to U.S., European, Russian, and/or Indo-Pacific national security resourcing, national innovation bases, and national/defense industrial bases.

Knowledge related to the challenges of U.S. Federal debt, principles of international trade and capital flows, drivers of economic growth in emerging market countries (especially China), and the challenges of economic development.

Professional certifications in an area that relate to the ES focus on national security and resourcing strategy, such as Level III certification in one or more Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DA WIA) career fields or comparable certifications in other government agencies or the private sector; certifications in logistics or supply chain specialties; certification in public budgeting and financial management; certification in public policy analysis and program evaluation; or similar.

Experience teaching in a Joint Professional Military Education program, to include supervising students' graduate research and writing projects.

Experience organizing, leading, and participating in graduate and/or senior executive education program study groups involving domestic and international site visits (field studies).

Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary methods and ability to teach a wide range of curriculum relevant to national security and resourcing strategy.

Criteria for Determining Academic Rank

Professor (AD-04): requires an earned doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education ( or international equivalent) in a discipline directly related to national security. Individual must have at least eight (8) years, or the instructional equivalent, full-time teaching experience at a regionally accredited university of which at least three (3) must be at the graduate level; a record of scholarship excellence, leadership among peers, and recognition, with a sustained record of contributions to the curriculum; record of engagement and advancement of institutional partnerships, relationships that leverage cross-component mission success, and networks of influence that contribute to national security.

Associate Professor (AD-03): requires an earned doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in a discipline directly related to national security. Individual must have at least five (5) years, or the instructional equivalent, full-time teaching experience at a regionally accredited university of which at least two (2) must be at the graduate level; a record of scholarship excellence, leadership among peers, and recognition; record of engagement and advancement of institutional partnerships, relationships that leverage cross-component mission success, and networks of influence that contribute to national security.

Assistant Professor (AD-02): Requires an earned master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education ( or international equivalent) in a discipline directly related to national security. Individual must have education or teaching experience in an academic environment, knowledge of best practices, commitment to lifelong learning, and preferably has at least two (2) years, or the instructional equivalent, of full- time teaching experience at a regionally accredited college or university; scholarship/research resulting in the creation and sharing of new knowledge through teaching or publishing; and aptitude in collaboration across institutional boundaries.

Education

Education Requirement: A Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in a discipline or focus area relevant to the ES academic program, such as business, finance, economics, international relations, supply chain management, technology and innovation, political economy, business strategy, industrial and organizational analysis, or similar disciplines/focus areas.

This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment is not to exceed 3 years with the possibility for extension. The position is governed by 10 USC 1595 and NDUI 1416.01 dated March 2017.

Initial Probationary Period: You will be required to serve an initial probationary period of 18 months.

Telework: Telework availability will be based upon the mission requirements and supervisory determination.
