OverviewTemple Rodef Shalom is a Reform Jewish congregation located in the Northern Virginia suburbs just outside Washington, DC. Since our founding in 1962, we have grown into the largest Jewish congregation in Virginia, serving over 1,750 households. We serve 200 families in our Early Childhood Center, nearly 800 students in our Religious School and hundreds of people each week who walk through our doors to pray, sing, learn, connect and mark life cycle moments.As a senior member of the staff, the Controller will be responsible for managing the day-to-day financial health and stability of the Temple, working with the Executive Director to ensure revenue collection, expense management, budget oversight, reporting, and compliance in accordance with industry standards. They will also 1) work with the Temple Treasurer and lay leaders to lead our annual budgeting process; 2) manage all financial reporting systems; 3) manage accounts payable and receivable, our external payroll service, and our external audit; and 4) manage other Finance Department staff.Essential Responsibilities: Financial OversightOversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements, along with appropriate internal controlsPrepare monthly and annual close of income statement and balance sheet, account reconciliations, G/L analysis, and variance analysis; provide explanations as neededConsistently analyze financial data and present accurate and timely financial reportsManage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with program leadershipWork with department heads to develop monthly reports on income and expensesCreate budget narratives to complement financial statementsWork with the Executive Director, Temple Treasurer, and the Financial Management Committee on the annual budgeting and planning process, as well as other financial management policies.Lead the annual external audit process, including preparing schedules, compliance, responding to the management letter and maintaining a relationship with our external audit firmWork with the Temple's Endowment Directors on the management, distribution, and investment of the Temple's $6 million endowment, and all aspects of proper accounting and reporting of income and spendingResponsible for all insurance policies, including Property, Liability, and Worker's CompGeneralReview, analyze, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controlsProvide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff and lay leadersRespond in a timely fashion on ad-hoc projects, reporting and data requestsPartner with the Executive Director and Temple Treasurer to engage the board's Financial Management Committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and deliverySupervise Temple Accountant, creating and promoting a positive work environmentQualifications/Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent; CPA preferred7-10 years of financial services experience in a non-profit organization, with a budget of $5m+At least 3 years of direct staff supervisory experienceDemonstrated fiduciary experience and in-depth knowledge of accounting rules including those specifically relevant to non-profit organizationsSolid experience managing audit activities and vendors, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investmentsExperience with systems implementation and financial data migrationStrong knowledge of MS Office, including the ability to manipulate large amounts of data and perform complex functions within Excel.Financial Management System experience, especially with Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks, Financial Edge NXT or a similar system.Knowledge of various payroll systemsAdditional Skills and RequirementsExcellent communications skills with demonstrated ability to write, speak and make presentations in an effective manner to all levels of internal and external stakeholdersHigh attention to detail, ability to multi-task, ability to propose value-added solutionsMust be able to work at a computer for 2-3 hours at a timeTemple Rodef Shalom requires all employees to show proof of Covid-19 vaccinationTemple Rodef Shalom is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
