Job Summary/Company: Our client, a national law firm, is searching for a go-getter Director of Professional Development to implement and promote comprehensive, high-quality attorney and staff development programs that meet the professional, business, and client service goals of the firm. This person will oversee the Professional Development Team and serve as a key member of the talent leadership team, contributing to the strategic direction and formulation of firm-wide policies, systems, and initiatives.

This position is available for hybrid (a mix of remote and in-office) work from the following states: DC, MD, VA, NC, FL, MA, PA, IL, MN, NY, NJ, IL, DE.

Full vaccination against COVID-19 is required for this position.

Responsibilities:
  • Survey attorneys, professionals, and firm leaders to identify professional development issues and areas for training.
  • Develop a curriculum for all attorneys to include subjects of general applicability, substantive law issues, professional skills, practice-specific training, level-specific training, client service, communications, management training and other educational programs.
  • Develop a curriculum for all staff to include subjects of general applicability, department-specific training, and manager training.
  • Identify and engage with outside consultants and trainers, as necessary, to provide programs, in addition to using in-house resources.
  • Partner with the firm's IT department to incorporate on-line training programs into the overall curriculum, as appropriate. Work with the IT Department to develop mechanisms for disseminating curriculum information firmwide.
  • Track participation in programs and obtain regular feedback for evaluation. Maintain a master calendar database of all training activities.
  • Integrate the firm's training program with applicable CLE requirements and establish/evaluate CLE tracking mechanisms.
  • Partner with the firm's Evaluation Committee to lead the evaluation process of all Associates, Counsel, and Patent Agents.
  • Advise partners on Associate development issues and providing feedback to Associates. Partner with Practice Groups, Practice Management and other Talent team members to facilitate Associate work allocation that promotes development and engagement.
  • Oversee implementation of the firm's mentor programs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the firm's policies and procedures with respect to attorney recruitment, orientation, work assignments, evaluations, mentor programs, and training with the objective of evaluating these systems against the "best practices" in major law firms.
  • Evaluate and enhance procedures for new attorney orientation and integration.
  • Develop materials to promote professional development activities internally and with candidates.
Qualifications/Background Profile:
  • Bachelor's degree required, with graduate or law degree preferred
  • Talent development experience including training, performance management, mentoring, work allocation and integration
  • Experience in a law firm or professional services environment required
  • Ability to effectively lead and strengthen a team to deliver high performance and ensure initiatives are effectively and efficiently delivered.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken and ability to establish credibility, build trust, and develop positive working relationships with team members, firm leadership, lawyers, and other professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, discretion, and composure in stressful situations.
  • Proven success in creating clarity and consistency in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects in a dynamic and complex environment, meeting deadlines and successfully managing the daily workload.
