Commercial Loan Operations - Trade Finance Manager

We are looking for an Operations Manager to lead our Trade Finance Services team. The team provides operational support for all Trade Finance related products across Commercial and Small Business Banking, including Standby Letters of Credit, Commercial Import & Export and Documentary Collections. This manager will need to leverage people leader skills, industry knowledge, and process management to develop team members, create and maintain process documentation, and manage risk and controls in alignment with industry standards and internal policies and procedures. Strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to navigate ambiguity to solve problems and drive change, and the ability to read and interpret complex trade related documents is important in this role. Familiarity with applicable Trade Finance standards such as ICC, The Wolfsberg Group, and BAFT is important. This manager will operate in a continuous improvement environment, build and maintain relationships across multiple stakeholder and partner teams, and set goals and expectations in alignment with business needs and the overall strategic goals and vision, values and mission of Capital One.

Responsibilities of the role include:
  • Responsible for drafting, negotiating, issuing, and advising Standby and Trade Letters of Credit for domestic and international transactions.
  • Act as point of contact for clients conducting Import, Export, and Standby related business transactions.
  • Leverage subject matter expertise to identify trends and provide transparent communications with key stakeholders to meet customer needs and optimize operating effectiveness.
  • Continuously strive to minimize risk and optimize efficiency using sustainable improvements to processes and controls.
  • Recruit, coach and develop top talent and drive engagement across partner teams.
  • Stay connected and informed with various industry trade associations such as BAFT, Wolfsburg, FATF, etc.
  • Provide guidance and make decisions grounded in industry best practices and internal policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and product walkthroughs with stakeholders and partner teams throughout the organization.
  • Providing ongoing coaching and guidance to junior associates and people leaders in support of career development and maximizing performance potential.
  • Establish and manage against a high standard of excellence in quality and efficiency across the team.
  • Represent the team and product throughout various internal and external audits, assessments and testing.
  • Opine and negotiate credit agreement language with internal/external counsel as it relates to Letters of Credit.
  • Identify, escalate, and resolve issues timely and transparently, leveraging available resources and tools to achieve sustainable risk management and minimize errors.
  • Use and develop managerial metrics and reporting to provide transparency and accountability to leadership and partner teams.
  • Manage teams in a flexible work environment including in-office and work from home associates.
  • Set clear standards and expectations for teams and individuals to maximize potential and meet team and organizational goals.
  • Other typical duties as assigned and in accordance with people leadership, performance management, team building and driving continuous improvement efforts.


Work at Home Technology Requirements:

  • A secure home office environment that is free from background noise and distractions
  • A reliable private internet connection that is not supplied by use cellular data (hot spot)
    • Cable or fiber connections are preferred
    • Internet service download speeds must be at least 5 mbps, with 10+ mbps preferred - check your download speed using a speed test. A sample one can be found here . To test your home internet from your personal computer at home, type www.speedtest.net into the web browser of your personal computer.
    • Sustained ability to maintain latency less than 250 ms in voice calls is required
  • Hard wired connectivity is preferred, any use of wireless connectivity must be Private (non-public) and password protected through WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption. If you have any questions about your encryption, please consult with your internet provider
    • A private network is password protected where you have ownership or line of sight to every device on the network
  • Capital One reserves the right to request proof of internet provider, speed and service package from the associate
  • Requirements are subject to change, as new systems and technology is delivered. Capital One reserves the right to modify internet service requirements with sixty (60) days notice.


Candidates must live within 100 miles driving distance of one of the hub locations based in McLean, VA.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification
  • At least 3 years of people management experience
  • At least 3 years of experience supporting Trade Finance products


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • At least 5 years of people management experience
  • At least 5 years of experience supporting Trade Finance products
  • Business Process Management (BPM) certification or at least 1 year process management experience
