Duties

The primary purpose of the position is to perform laboring duties that require moderately heavy physical effort requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment. In order to accomplish the laborer duties, the incumbent must on a regular and recurring basis also operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, etc.) to transport personnel, material or equipment to work sites located on the the park.
  • Maintain landscapes and roadsides using equipment including riding mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, 3-blade trimmers, backpack blowers, work trucks, and hand tools
  • Perform custodial services such as cleaning the restrooms, Visitor Center, and administrative offices and emptying interior trash cans.
  • Perform trail maintenance.
  • Pick up litter along roadsides and empty exterior trash cans.
Hourly wage salary duty stationed at George Washington Birthplace NM, located in Colonial Beach, VA $18.45 - $21.52. It is anticipated that two positions will be filled at this location.

Hourly wage salary duty stationed at Thomas Stone NHS, located in Port Tobacco, MD $19.50 - $22.72. It is anticipated that one position will be filled at this location.

George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located in the Northern Neck area of Virginia in the county of Westmoreland. The location is approximately 70 miles northeast of Richmond, Virginia; 35 miles south of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and 70 miles southeast of Washington, DC.

Thomas Stone National Historic Site is located in rural Charles County Maryland, just 30 miles south of our nation's capital, and only two miles from historic Port Tobacco, the county's former county seat.

Both areas are quiet and rural with quaint towns along the main thoroughfares and beautiful scenery in between. Public schools for both counties in which the majority of employees reside include full accredited elementary and high schools. There are small shopping centers located in each county and major shopping, a university, and hospitalization is easily accessible within 30-40 minutes. Spring absolutely beautiful, followed by hot and humid summers, extremely colorful falls, and relatively mild winters. The temperate climate, rural setting and historic significance, and access to plentiful water and outdoor activities are why people love these areas.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You may also be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Government housing is not available.

Qualifications

Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

    If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

    The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

    Physical Demands: The work requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 90 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

    Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.

    Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
