As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working here are making a difference.Summary: As the Financial Analyst, you will provide vital support through your responsibilities for the execution of financial processes and analyses integral to forecasting, budgeting and long-range planning for the HHMI grants programs and HHMI's scientific initiatives related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).Reporting to the Grants Finance Manager, you will summarize financial information, analyze trends, and develop monthly and quarterly reports, as well as make recommendations and provide independent, substantive support including the preparation of presentations to management. You will also explain and synthesize concepts and data in a written format for audiences both within the finance team and beyond. As a trusted partner, you will aid budget area heads and cost center managers in a financial capacity and serve as our subject matter expert supporting HHMI's financial and grantmaking systems.In this role, you will:Budgeting - Develop, coordinate, and analyze budgets for HHMI's Grants and DEI programs, including meeting with budget area heads and cost center managers to assist in developing their zero-based budgets. Assist in consolidation of budgets for overall presentation to management. Reconcile the annual budget upload in Workday and Cognos.Management Reporting, Forecasting, and Variance Analysis - Summarize financial information for monthly, quarterly, year-end and ad hoc management presentations including results on actuals and projections. Analyze expenditures. Recommend forecast adjustments and prepare variance analysis.Long Range Planning - Assist in the development and maintenance of long-range financial planning models for the Grants and DEI programs and facilitate the incorporation of those into the Science long range plan. Grants and DEI Program Management - Be a leader in the initiation of awards, to include cost center creation and management, role assignment, and access control. Quarterly reconcile grant program approvals, budgets, and payment activity.Administrative Accounting - Contribute to the monthly and year-end financial close process by preparing correcting journal adjustments, payroll adjustments and budget transfers.Systems Knowledge and Maintenance - Become an expert in HHMI's grants management system, Pathway. Maintain and test Workday financial reports. Provide training and assistance as needed to assigned users. Participate in the implementation or upgrade of financial and budgeting systems.Liaison and Customer Service - Build strong relationships with assigned budget owners to ensure collaborative efforts in preparation of budgets and forecasts. Serve as a resource to the budget owners and as the subject matter expert on grants management, reporting, budgets, actual expenses/revenues and causes for variances. Provide assistance with a high customer service orientation.Others - Provide ad hoc analysis as needed. Education & Experience:Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or a combination of education and related experience.CPA and/or MBA preferredMinimum five years of experience in budget planning and financial analysis.Experience in grants budgeting a plus. High-level proficiency in data modeling and spreadsheet analysis is required.High-level proficiency in MS Office Suite, Adobe, Workday, Tableau and Cognos CafA$ (C) or similar systems is preferred. Experience with grants management software a plus.Experience in Grants Management, preferably in an academic or scientific setting a plusSkills & Abilities:Analytical, reasoning skills and excellent judgment are critical.Proficiency in MS Office Suite with advanced excel skillsDemonstrated high level of proficiency with data modeling.Strong oral and written communications skills are essential. Ability to prepare written budget justifications and financial footnotes.Attention to detail a must. Ability to prepare, review and verify analyses and documentation for accuracy.Must be able to function as a technical and subject matter expert, with the ability to understand and articulate orally and in writing how and why things are done.Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities, meet, and anticipate frequent deadlines in a timely manner.Ability to adjust flexibly to changing priorities and still operate effectively in a fluid environment.Ability to take initiative, be creative and proactive, think 'out of the box' to find innovative solutions.Excellent independent judgment and decision-making skills consistently demonstrating discretion, tact, and diplomacy.Demonstrated can-do approach, with strong customer service focus.Ability to effectively interact with people at all staff levels within and outside the Institute.Physical Requirements:Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace.
