Job Announcement

Operates vehicles and medium/light equipment in a variety of maintenance activities related to road sign instillation which include pickup trucks, crew trucks, service truck, bucket truck, snow plow, pneumatic tools, etc. Conducts inspections within the Fairfax County Road sign program. Engages in manual labor as necessary. Maintains compliance with the approved performance standards for this position. Answers citizen inquiries regarding sign issues. Develops, fabricates, and install signs in the right-of-way within Fairfax County.

Note: This position is considered Emergency Services Personnel which requires the incumbent to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working within the VDOT right-of-way with heavy traffic patterns. Experience with reading maps Experience with providing and understanding specific and precise instructions to and from utility companies for correct placement of Highway signs. Experience with understanding and interpreting the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control devices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, personal fall arrest harness. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of working within the VDOT right-of-way with heavy traffic patterns, ability to read maps, ability to provide and understand specific and precise instructions to and from utility companies for correct placement of Highway signs candidate must have the ability to interpret and understand the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control devices.
