The District of Columbia (DC) Department of Public Works (DPW) is currently hiring skilled and experienced Tow Crane Drivers to join our team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serves as a uniformed member of the vehicle impoundment operation, driving truck mounted hydraulic automotive cranes to tow automobiles of various makes, models and sizes; to large trucks, buses and trailers cabs as required, all trucks operated are either gasoline or diesel powered.  Travels to locations given by dispatcher, locating specified vehicles, verifying impoundment eligibility.  Determines appropriate type of towing procedures necessary for safe and efficient movement of vehicle.  Tow on street, alleys and parking lots in all areas of District of Columbia, in all types of weather on a 24-hour basis. As assigned, drives a 5-ton truck with 4-wheel axel drive, five forward speed transmission, hydraulically operated dump body with jet abrasive spreader as necessary.

As assigned drives cranes or flatbed trucks with varying maximum lifting capacity depending upon the length, angle, and position of the boom.  Determines the weight of the vehicles to be lifted and towed; and if unknown, must estimate based on general knowledge of weighs of various materials.  Further determines which moves the crane needs to make in order to complete move and ensure the lifting capacity is not exceeded. Issues tickets for parking violations in accordance with the DCMR 18.  Writes Towing Control Number in grease pencil on the rear window of the vehicle prior to towing.

Qualifications and Education 

Skill in use of clutches, levers, brakes and accelerator to raise and lower boom; raise and lower hoist line with load; use considerable eye, hand and foot coordination required to produce desired movements while watching load and clearance of the objects.  Ability to determine need to compensate for changes in lifting capacity of crane caused by variations in angle and length of boom.

Preferred high school graduation or equivalent.

License and Certifications

Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License, with air brakes endorsement DOT Medical Certification. Incumbent must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License, with a least a Class “B” or “Restricted A” endorsement, from a Washington Metropolitan Area Jurisdiction.


Working Conditions/ Environment

Subject to moderate noise, vibration, jarring and swaying motion while operating trucks and from towed vehicles.  Subject to hazardous moving traffic conditions, as well as the possibility of injury associated with operating heavy lift equipment.  Operates cranes with wide range of different size and type of vehicles in towing during all weather and traffic conditions e.g., snow emergencies containing severe ice, snow, high winds and hazardous roadways. Subject to fumes and odors from fuel, exhaust, and lubricants. Exposed to intense heat and humidity while outside cab of truck; cold, snow, mud while working on the outside; dirt, grease and/ or mud while making hitch-up. Subject to cuts, scrapes and bruises, broken bones and other injuries from heavy and sharp tools, crane implements, and components of vehicles being towed. Further, subject to assaults by irate owners or operators of vehicles being towed.

Tour of Duty: The incumbent of this position may be required to work various rotating shifts as assigned and may be required to work weekends and observed holidays.

Salary Range: $25.76 Per Hour - $33.68 Per Hour; based on funding

Collective Bargaining Unit: this position is in the Collective Bargaining Unit BNA.

This position is designated as an Essential Employee position, in accordance with the provisions of Section 1271 of Chapter 12 of the District Personnel Manual.
