Duties

As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic Inspector, WG-5801-12, you will perform the below duties:
  • Inspects a large variety of heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles such as attack tanks, large cranes, tank retrievers, fire trucks, bridge transporters, armored vehicle launched bridges, bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, self propelled earth compacting equipment, self propelled artillery, etc. May also inspect heavy artillery, small arms, powered support and other equipment or components of equal or lesser complexity.
  • Inspects complex, interrelated mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic and electrical systems, equipment and their components while in operation or in a standby condition.
  • Inspects equipment to determine repairs needed. Utilizes established Maintenance Expenditure Limits (MEL) to evaluate economic feasibility of repair(s).
  • Inspects the full range of equipment as described above at remote worksites in support of field organizations, field units during field exercise training periods, or before major pieces of equipment are sent for repair to a supporting maintenance facility. Serves as inspector on Command Maintenance Evaluation Teams (COMET) and/or as a member of Maintenance Assistance and Instruction Teams (MAIT).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.


Qualifications

REMARKS: TEMPORARY PROMOTION Position opened to current employees in the Virginia Army National Guard Military Technician Program. Selected applicant will receive a temporary promotion Not to Exceed 1 Year. Should the need for temporary time limitations placed on this position no longer exist, the Temporary Promotion could be converted to a permanent action without further competition. Additionally, applicant selected can be returned to the position held prior to the Temporary Promotion when the temporary action is no longer needed.

WHO CAN APPLY:
GROUP I - All qualified Male/Female Enlisted Personnel (E-5/SGT - E-9/SGM) or Warrant Officers (W1/WO1 - W2/CW2), currently employed (permanent) in the Virginia Army National Guard Military Technician Program.

Military Grades: (E-5/SGT - E-9/SGM) or a Warrant Officer (W1/WO1 - W2/CW2)

GENERAL EXPERIENCE : Applicant must have experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : Applicant must have at least 18 months of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the WG-11 level, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems in the Federal government. This experience may also have been obtained in the private sector, but must demonstrate that it is comparable to the WG grade indicated. This experience must include activities such as:
  • Experience or training diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying more complex vehicles, equipment, and more complicated systems.
  • Experience which has provided a thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience applying independent judgment in determining methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex maintenance and repair problems.
  • Experience in testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on vehicles, equipment and systems.
