We serve as a bridge between newsrooms and Gannett's product division, helping extend our web platform's capabilities and building tools for reporters and editors. The Storytelling Studio is part of a family of integrated teams that also include an AR/VR group, graphics desks, print design and digital engagement specialists.Role DescriptionWe are seeking a designer with outstanding skills in translating product requirements and audience goals into compelling presentations and intuitive interfaces. This person should be comfortable working within established brand identity systems and pattern libraries, but also adept at extending design systems as needed. In this role, you can expect toCollaborate intensively with counterparts in newsrooms, product UX and core platform development, corporate branding and marketing, in addition to the designers, developers and project managers of the Storytelling Studio.Design innovative storytelling approaches that capitalize on emerging browser or front-end development technology, while balancing the principles of journalism.Design user workflows and authoring environments commonly found in content management systems.Conduct user experience interviews, with both editorial stakeholders and audience members, and apply insights gained to improve designs.Work in an agile environment, moving from sketches, to wireframes, to prototypes and, ultimately, to polished product.Use engagement analytics data following publication to refine product designs and develop new hypotheses.Key Requirementsprior experience in UX / design, or equivalent role; previous experience in media or publishing preferredExperience across all phases of design and product developmentFluency with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe CC, Principle, Framer, Invision, Zeplin, etc.Experience with human-centered design and design thinkingThorough understanding of design for the interactive web, specifically mobileKnowledge of interdependency of web design on CSS, Javascript and browser standardsComfort with design and development version control systemsComfort with product management applications such as JIRA and ConfluenceDemonstrable motivation as self-starter and perpetual student of design and technologyBonus Points ForFront-end development skill, including familiarity with frameworks such as Svelte.Data visualization skill, including D3.js, Highcharts, or other similar frameworksNote On LocationThe Storytelling Studio is a distributed team open to remote work. In addition to our HQ-based colleagues, we currently have team members in Iowa, Tennessee, Michigan, Massachusetts, Illinois and New York, not to mention newsrooms in 33 states.
