DescriptionDo you have a passion for the development and evaluation of mechanical systems using Systems Engineering (SE) and Model-Based Engineering? We are the Shipboard Systems group (KBH) in the Force Projection Sector at JHU/APL. We are seeking an experienced staff person for the Payload Integration section (KBH-5). This staff person must be ready to take on new challenges as the section dives into the uncharted territory of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Digital Engineering (DE), and related areas! This section (KBH-5) is a key trusted resource to the Navy Strategic Systems Programs and other Navy offices for development of payload integration concepts and evaluation of newly developed and currently deployed systems. The staff members of this section provide critical support to our Navy sponsors, developing approaches to help our sponsors and the associated prime and subcontractors manage risk, develop new systems and existing system modifications, and embrace the changes necessary to move from a traditional SE mindset into the world of MBSE. Your specific tasks: Perform system concept development and evaluation tasking on behalf of SSP. This may include traditional SE tasks such as Requirements Management, Functional Allocation, Physical Allocation, and involve physics based performance modeling. Tasking will cover prototype and existing deployed launcher systems as well as system design modifications, trades, and follow-on system development. Push the boundaries for MBSE. SSP and the Navy are moving towards a model-based approach for all types of engineering, including systems engineering. Find ways to improve on existing processes and expand into MBSE, including model integration of performance models (MATLAB, etc.) with systems engineering models (Cameo/SysML). Support a wide variety of test and evaluation efforts. This could include both small scale tests conducted in a lab environment, as well as full scale system tests conducted either at government owned test facilities or onboard Navy platforms. Get involved at the sponsor level with leading various working groups across both government and industry. Gain a deep technical understanding of submarine launcher and other shipboard systems and leverage that knowledge to perform integration of various physics-based models. QualificationsYou meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you Have a BS or equivalent in Mechanical or Systems Engineering (or a closely related field) with 3 years of professional experience. Are able to interact effectively with individuals of different experience levels within the Laboratory as well as with outside stakeholders. Have the verbal and writing skills and disposition necessary for documenting and presenting work to APL colleagues and government sponsors. Are willing and able to travel occasionally to US Navy facilities, bases and contractor sites. Are able to obtain Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship. Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you Have a MS or PhD in Mechanical or Systems Engineering (or a closely related field), and at least 5 years of professional experience as a Systems Engineer, particularly with a focus on MBSE for mechanical systems. Have a strong interest in Model Based Systems Engineering Have experience managing and effectively leading model integration efforts, particularly using Agile methods. Have experience interacting with and communicating with government agencies and external organizations. Have experience working with submarines or submarine launcher systems. Are a team player with demonstrated resilience dealing with change in a dynamic environment. Have an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance. Why work at APL?
