Description Engineering Technician III (with possible steps) (ARL-21-1458-F): Bowhead has an immediate position to fill to support the Army Research Lab at APG, MD. This position is an Engineering Technician to support various aspects of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The Engineering Technician demonstrates initiative, willingness, and ability to learn new skills as required to complete unique tasks related to electronics and mechanical fabrication and testing. Has strong mechanical ability to perform developmental tasks that are not completely standardized or prescribed. Selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment to complete required tasks. Receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or researchers as needed; performs recurring work independently; work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions. The Engineering Tech performs complex engineering support assignments and builds / assembles mechanisms and simple equipment following layouts and diagrams. Serves as a participant and / or lead for experiments and demonstrations. The Engineering Tech is able to use various machining fabrication equipment and hand tools. Serves in the role of small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) pilot in which he or she performs operational responsibilities to support commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom-designed UAS, both fixed wing and rotary wing platforms. Must have a valid in-state driver s license. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and work inside lab / fabrication spaces and outdoors in varying weather and work location conditions. Ability to wear all appropriate safety gear (eye, hearing, helmets, etc.) Duties may include but are not limited to: Layout, build, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify mechanical and electronic system components. Move and set up assemblies and components for use in experiments. Manage and maintain shop equipment and a safe operating environment. Fabricate and assemble complex parts and work with engineers to develop functional precision mechanical and electrical prototypes. Demonstrates informed judgement and demonstrates clear communication with end-users while troubleshooting problematic components. Recommend improvements to current practices with a focus on state of the art technology. Identify COTS technologies as solutions to system requirements. Responsible for the fabrication, modification, and maintenance of fixed wing and rotary wing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) small UAS platforms for experimentation and demonstration. Assists with programming autonomous UAS maneuvers. Launches and recovers UAS platforms; performs pre-flight, inflight, and post flight checks with documentation. Keeps abreast of all local and federal safety standards and regulations in regards to UAS safety. Able or willing to learn to manually fly multi-rotor, single rotor, fixed wing, and other experimental small UAS configurations. Familiarity with UAS control and autopilot software (eg, QGroundControl, Pixracer, mRO, ROS, etc.). Helps develop and maintain inventory and maintenance schedules of in-house UAS and UGV components, and performs general housekeeping duties within testing laboratory areas. Follows all local operating procedures and suggests improvements for safety, efficiency, and effectiveness. Must maintain at all times: Able to obtain and maintain an FAA UAS pilot certification (FAA Part 107) Ability to keep up with current information and advances in electronic components, COTS UAS, and electronics integration tools / techniques. Ability to remotely operate (ie, tele-operate) small ground vehicles according to local guidelines and SOPs. Familiarity with or proficient in various CAD and CAM software packages (eg, Solidworks, AutoCAD, Fusion, MasterCam, etc.). Ability to drive material handling equipment (forklift, skid steer, ATVs with utility trailers, etc.). Certification to operate Government and Team Bowhead Equipment and Vehicles SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
