Duties

  • Based on a thorough knowledge of the Deputy Commissioner's views and policies, provides advice and guidance to DC/AC level Staff on program and administrative issues.
  • Maintains daily contacts with AC staff to keep abreast of major activities in the various components. Ensures that AC staff are kept aware of any major developments or activities in which the Deputy Commissioner is involved.
  • Develops, organizes and researches issues for background and briefing materials on management and administrative matters for use by the Deputy Commissioner and/or staff.
  • Such information can include personnel issues, awards determinations, training, budget, equal opportunity discrimination complaints, and labor management and employee relations issues.
  • Prepares responses to controls and other sensitive correspondence. Briefs the Deputy Commissioner or staff on pertinent issues and concerns. Receives incoming correspondence requiring the personal attention of the Deputy Commissioner.
  • Personally prepares responses to inquiries of a highly technical or sensitive nature or routes assignments to appropriate senior staff members for response.
  • Reviews all material prepared for the signature of the Deputy Commissioner to ensure conformance to established SSA program policies and guidelines and to ensure that the correspondence reflects information that is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Assists in arranging all meetings and conferences for the DC. Makes necessary travel arrangements including schedules, reservations, travel vouchers, etc.
  • Develops background information for meetings, participates in management discussions/meetings concerning confidential issues, prepares and distributes meeting/conference summaries.
  • Assures that resulting decisions are brought to the attention of the appropriate officials. Keeps the DC informed of such actions and, on own initiative, sets up the necessary controls to ensure timely completion.

To qualify at the GS-9 level, you must have one of the following:
  • At least 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-7 or above , or equivalent, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled which has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience MUST include performing work that primarily consists of administrative and workflow tasks essential to the effective operation of an office. (e.g. timekeeping, scheduling appointments/meetings, filing, maintaining office records, telephone coordination, managing calendars, and drafting, reviewing or receiving correspondences); OR
  • A Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate education.; OR
  • Completed 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. Your educational degree must be in in a field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate education.; OR
  • When combined , graduate education and experience total 100% of the requirements

If you are qualifying on the basis of education or satisfying an educational requirement, submit a copy of your transcripts that includes your name, the name of the educational institution, course title(s), number of credits, grade, and date of completion . Foreign Education: If your transcripts show education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must also provide documentation that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in a conventional/accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law. If selected, you will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 no later than November 22, 2021 and submit documentation of vaccination by November 23, 2021 OR shortly after appointment or onboarding with SSA, if this occurs after November 22, 2021. At the time of selection, SSA will provide additional information regarding what documentation you must provide and how you can request a legally required exception from this requirement.

**This position is NOT virtual or eligible for outstationing. Selectee will need to reside in the local commuting area prior to the start date. Selectees will be expected to commute to the Woodlawn, HQ duty location once normal business operations resume.

This position is eligible for telework in accordance with agency and office policy.
