How You'll Contribute Job Description Summary The Senior Accounting Manager is the main liaison with local accountants/auditors to ensure that all records are maintained in accordance with local requirements as well as US generally accepted accounting principles. This Manager is responsible for the accounting and analysis of the Society's investment activity including our investment in National Geographic Partners. As part of this role, will be the primary liaison with NGP staff regarding quarterly financial reporting, cash distributions, annual Agreed Upon Procedures and valuation of NGP. The position is responsible for assisting with month end management reporting and board and external reporting and will coordinate with tax to ensure consistent reporting across the Society. Participate in special projects as instructed by the Vice President or CFO. Your Impact Responsibilities Include Audit coordination: Main point of contact for the Society's consolidated and other benefit audits. Responsible for coordination of audit field work with audit team, preparation of consolidated and consolidating financial statements including all consolidation and elimination entries in accordance with GAAP. (30%) Investment Activity: Responsible for the accounting of the Society's investment activity including the carrying value of the investments, realized and unrealized gains and losses and dividends and interest. Ensure the Society's controls over the investment process are operating properly and are documented in coordination with the CIO office. Ensure that management's review over the appropriateness of the valuation of the investment portfolio is properly documented. Responsible for analyzing data and preparing "look-back" analyses on alternative investments. (20%) Investment in NGP: Oversee the Accounting for transactions with NG Partners, ensuring all services and work performed between entities is accrued properly and recorded/billed, working with the appropriate Finance & Planning counterpart. Work with NGP Finance to receive quarterly financial reports and record NGS's equity pickup in the financial statements. Review NGP monthly statements and work with NGP to understand key variances from budget and projections. Main liaison with outside valuation professionals on providing support and analyses regarding the year-end value of NGP. Work with external auditors, both the Society audit team and NGP auditors, to develop audit plan for NGP investment. (25%) Primary lead for all external reporting, including board reports, and coordination with tax team, to ensure consistent accurate financial reporting. This includes quarterly compliance reports for banking covenants, lead preparation for Moody's annual review, and quarterly board reporting. (15%) Provide guidance, direction, and oversight to accountants who post transactions and perform account reconciliations in assigned areas. Develop and maintain positive relationships with managers and staff and provide them with necessary financial results and analyses, explanation of the Society's policies and other general business guidance. Participate in special projects as assigned by management. Provide audit schedules and support for external and internal audits, particularly foreign audits. Perform ad hoc account analysis as necessary and other duties as assigned. (10%) What You'll Bring Educational background Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA preferred Minimum Years and Type of Experience At least 8+ years of accounting and general ledger experience with at least 3+ years of management experience. Experience working in a non-profit environment greatly preferred. Some public accounting experience preferred. Necessary Knowledge and Skills CPA preferable (or demonstrated in-depth knowledge of GAAP) Very strong technical accounting GAAP skills Very strong technical research abilities and GAAP interpretation skills Exceptional business/financial analytical skills Exceptional complex problem-solving skills Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to prepare and execute presentations to management and prepare technical accounting position papers Experience with highly integrated general ledger systems and subsystems - Workday a plus Strong PC skills including Microsoft Office applications (including Word, Powerpoint and Excel) and enterprise GL solutions. Advanced experience with Excel required Knowledge of Workday ERP system is a strong plus Ability to prioritize workload, manage time efficiently, and meet required deadlines. Supervision None Job Designation Hybrid - This position has been designated Hybrid, meaning your position will be performed from NGS Base Camp three fixed days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and can be performed remotely for two fixed days a week (Monday and Friday).
