Duties

Performs daily rounds of all areas assigned and examines the nursing logbooks, and talks with nurses and other professional staff concerning current problems, and those noted during the previous evening, night and weekend shifts. Takes action to correct problems during rounds and problems that are identified by other staff.

Recognizes potential safety problems while rounding and be prepared to correct problem or refer it to the appropriate shop supervisor or Safety Manager for action from a more appropriate source. Incumbent must be able to analyze the cause of apparent problems to determine if repair is required or if operator error or misapplication is responsible.

Troubleshoots diagnoses and makes minor emergent repairs including, but not limited, to those required in the following trades, which could be accomplished at any time during a shift.

Repairs and maintains wooden structures such as furniture, railings, shelves, doors, bulletin boards, etc. Repairs cabinet and locker doors to include hardware, locks, tracks, etc. Installs and replaces ceiling tiles, bumper rails, handrails, corner guards, cove base, and other parts of buildings using hand and power tools.

Makes repairs and may perform some minor installations on existing utilities and disposal systems. Inspects, repairs and replaces fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain water and drainage systems. Repairs flush valves, faucets, showers, vacuum breakers, or other parts in leaky valves, water closets, etc.

Must be knowledgeable of how various supply disposal and utility systems operate in order to perform preventive maintenance inspections and make necessary repairs.

Knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques.

Must know how to apply coating materials so that the surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips.

Must have the skill needed to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty surfaces.

Must have the skill needed to brush out, roll on, and spray coating materials, as well as the skill needed to apply other related methods and techniques. Must have skill in the use of tools and equipment.

Knowledgeable in the repair and preventive maintenance of typical residential and commercial-style heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Replaces and repairs thermostats, adjusts local temperature settings.

Practical knowledge of plumbing principles including a general knowledge of flow, drainage, slant, slope and sanitation.

Knowledge of the design, materials, and operating characteristics of parts and equipment within small portions of water supply, sewage disposal, and similar utility systems. For example: traps, sections of pipe drains, faucets, union joints and similar items.

Skill in troubleshooting, installing and making repairs to small parts and sections of existing water and sewage systems. Skill in measuring, cutting, bending and threading pipe and tile to replace sections by following existing routes, hangers, and levels without change.

Skill in removing, cleaning, and replacing joints and fixtures such as traps, faucets, and unions; and skill in using various drain cleaning devices.

Skill in reading and using building plans, sketches, blueprints, and work orders.

Ability to work as a member of a team to assist other crafts and trades personnel during work assignments.

Applies a basic knowledge of material strengths and applications to construct, install, repair, or modify items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding and scaffolds.

Skill to operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment such as hammers, handsaws, drills, routers, power saws, power sanders, and planes to produce a serviceable product.

Ability to read, interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, National Electric Code, specifications and related requirements.

Knowledge of where fixtures, wiring and controls are installed and how they operate.

Ability to read and follow wiring diagrams.

Skill in removing and replacing lighting fixtures and controls, and in making repairs on such related items as connections and wires.

Skill in replacing and rearranging power outlets, switches and light fixtures in existing systems. Ability to test completed circuits for functionality after repair or installation.

Practical knowledge of the design and operating characteristics of small commercial and domestic refrigeration, chilled water and air conditioning systems.

Ability to make simple air flow measurements.

Skill in the use of hand tools, portable power tools and a wide variety of test equipment; skill in troubleshooting, installing and making minor repairs

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Incumbent will be required to life, carry, push or pull a variety of materials and equipment such as fixtures, tools, ladders and testing equipment. Incumbent will also be required to climb, balance, stop, kneel and crouch to make necessary repairs.
Incumbent usually works indoors; however, he/she may be occasionally exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on external work sites. Many work sites are not, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant orders.
