Duties

  • Support the DoD Hearing Conservation Programs and Hearing Readiness Programs by utilizing the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System-Hearing Conservation (DOEHRS-HC) system.
  • Determine appropriate referral in cases where significant changes in hearing may have occurred or where other auditory symptoms reported by the patient trigger referral to an audiologist, medical officer or other health care manager.
  • Under the direction of an Audiologist, assist with pediatric hearing evaluations.
  • Perform otoscopy and middle ear screening by tympanometry and may perform special diagnostic audiometric testing under the supervision of an audiologist.
  • Assist the audiologist in taking ear impressions for custom hearing protection or communication devices for musical groups, aviation personnel, shooters and Special Warfare personnel.
  • Collect data and ensure complete data entry into electronic medical records.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of audiometric technician training courses, and oversees the practicum during these training courses.
  • Maintain a supply of hearing aid parts and supplies; inspect, repair, receive, distribute, maintain, dispose of, and account for hearing-aid program supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Proficiently maintain reporting to Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program via computerized data base, e.g. Virginia Department of Health Infant Screening and Infant Tracking System (VDH VISITS).
  • Manage patient scheduling by receipt of consults from phone, FAX and electronic referral sources.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • You must undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Pursuant to EO 14043, all Federal employees, regardless of duty location or work arrangement, must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by November 22, 2021, or before entrance on duty if after November 22, subject to exceptions as required by law.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing hearing screening to newborn patients, assisting an audiologist with patient care, and entering patient information into an automated system such as Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA), Composite Health Care System (CHCS), or Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System-Hearing Conservation (DOEHRS-HC). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06)

Although not required, Audiology Tech Certification is preferred.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
