Duties

  • Plans, conceptualizes, and conducts research on consumer access to and use of banking and financial services, the banking and financial services industry and markets, and FDIC-insured commercial banks and thrifts, with particular emphasis on those developments affecting insured institutions.
  • Plans and carries out research projects, studies, and analyses, including determination of data needed to complete assignments; sources, reliability, and availability of such data; method appropriate to carry out the analysis; evaluation techniques to be used in interpreting findings.
  • Leads, or takes a significant role in, the development and production of publications to disseminate analysis to supervisory personnel, senior management of the Corporation, other regulators, the industry, the academic community, and the general public, including determining appropriate data and analytical techniques, and conducting analyses. Compiles and supplies information for incorporation into studies, policy decisions, and testimony.
  • Performs mathematical, econometric and statistical calculations; constructs visual aids that convey technical information to general audiences.
  • Writes clear and concise descriptions of analyses and findings, incorporating the input of other DIR management and research staff to ensure that the findings included in the written material is supported by the research methods, data, and techniques employed in the study.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious/spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. 1. Basic Requirements For All Applicants:

A. Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

2. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, applicants must meet the defined qualification requirements listed below:

CG-12: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 11 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience involves using economic principles and theories as well as designing financial or econometric models to perform economic research and analyses of the financial services industry, financial markets, global economic developments, or economic policy.

EDUCATION: Education may be substituted for experience in qualifying for this position. If qualifying based on education, applicant must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Applications will be accepted from applicants who expect to complete their Ph.D. by November 28, 2022. Please ensure your resume indicates Month and Year you expect to receive your Ph.D.

Combination of education and experience: A combination of graduate level education, and specialized experience as described above, that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

Candidates who are selected for the position based on education, must provide documentation of completing all requirements for a Ph. D or equivalent doctoral degree prior to entering on duty.

CG-13: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 12 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience designing models as part of a publication or an institutional objective, using economic principles and theories, performing economic research and analyses of the financial services industry or economic policy, and informing business or policy decisions.

CG-14: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 13 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience using economic principles and theories to address economic problems, performing economic research and analyses of the financial services industry or economic policy; designing econometric models; and informing business or policy decisions.
