Duties

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
  • Provides verbatim reporting of judicial and administrative proceedings and also provides Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) on an as-needed basis
  • Provides accurate and timely transcripts of court proceedings that constitute official court records
  • Safeguards verbatim files, Rich Tech Format (RTF) files, Secure Digital (SD) cards, voice writer and backup audio files of the proceedings, properly identifying records by date, judge, case title and location
  • Uploads the Daily Worksheet and RTF file to the Web Transcript Tracking System (WTTS) and other routine paperwork to the Division Director as requested
  • Works with all of the judges of the District of Columbia Courts and supporting staff in a competent and professional manner
  • Has available adequate and serviceable equipment for the efficient performance of duties without interruption to the Court's schedules, to include remote court reporting
  • Complies with all rules as contained in the Rules of Superior Court and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals relating to and dealing with court reporting and the timely production of transcripts and additional directives as may be required by the Division
  • Conducts verbatim reporting at a minimum of 225 words per minute and must possess an excellent command of the English language

The ability and readiness for employees to telework impacts operational requirements and capabilities. While the DC Courts has a telework policy, eligibility is determined by the respective division where the position is situated within the agency.

To qualify for this position, you must submit the following:

  • Documentation / Proof of Education (e.g. copy of HS diploma, GED certificate, college transcript or degree)
  • Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) Certificate
  • List of three (3) professional references

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma and graduation from a National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) accredited court reporting program, plus two (2) years of court reporting experience.

    Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification is required.

    Ability to conduct verbatim reporting at a minimum rate of 225 words per minute is required.

    Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) certification and/or Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC) certification is preferred.

    Candidates must furnish their own equipment and software to be able to provide realtime reporting to the judiciary and to produce their own transcripts. Candidates must also be able to lift materials of up to forty (40) pounds.

    Documentation of education must be submitted with your application or your application will not be considered.

    Please note that authorization for the release of your adult criminal record revealing any convictions and forfeitures, and any criminal cases currently pending before the courts is required. If you are selected for the position, a criminal history records check will be conducted.

    Education

    To qualify based on education, upload a copy of your college transcript or degree. The transcript must show the name of the college or university, your name, list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.

    This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive Federal civil service.

    Please note there is a mandatory one year probationary period for all non-judicial new employees.
