Accounting ManagerThe General Accounting Department is seeking an Accounting Manager who will be a member of the Controller's Office leadership team. This individual plans, organizes, leads and manages accounting and financial reporting processes within the Controller's Office. This role possesses strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills. In support of the University's mission, they are responsible for developing, reviewing and implementing policies and procedures relating to the University's investment and benefits financial accounting and reporting in the General Accounting Department. S/he should understand investments, funds, hedge funds, and multiple investment vehicles to assist with quarterly fair value analysis.The Accounting Manager is responsible for the review of significant accounting transactions as well as the posting of the daily, monthly and quarterly GAAP journal entries. This role oversees activities on various accounts, analyzes past and current data and prepares expense projections and operational forecasts. They assist with the annual external audit and quarterly trustee reporting. This position generates routine and ad hoc reports and conceptualizes projects and follows through. This indivserves as a project lead for accounting projects and provides direction staff concerning accounting issues.This position will work closely with the Investment Office, Human Resources Benefits Services staff and third party service providers (University's actuaries, plan administrators and trustee/custodian).Specific Duties & Responsibilities:Manage the preparation of selected footnotes to the annual audited financial statements of the University as well as the supporting schedules for the unaudited quarterly University GAAP statements.Review actuarial projections, valuation reports (and underlying data), and year-end disclosure reports for the University's annual audited financial statements.Manage and review annual financial statements for the University's two Defined Benefit (DB) and five Defined Contribution (DC) plans.Manage and review accounting entries and reconciliations related to the DB and DC plans and various fringe benefit related accounts.Review actuarial projections, valuation reports (and underlying data), and year-end disclosure reports for the University's annual audited financial statements.Keep abreast of upcoming regulatory/legislative and accounting changes and communicate impact of such changes to management.Review and analyze significant accounting transactions to ensure proper GAAP accounting and reporting.Review and approve reconciliations of various SAP accounts, modules or in blackline.Oversee and ensure timely and accurate monthly close of the investments.Review endowment values and methodology for allocation payout, buy-ins and market value.Review calculation and methodology for combined investment return.Consult with external auditors on accounting and reporting issues for areas of responsibility.Assist in the preparation of materials for the quarterly Trustee Finance and Audit Committee meetings.Collaborate and communicate with University actuaries, third party administrators/vendors, Investment office, JHU-APL and trustee/custodian to review and understand complex and unusual transactions, valuation reports and special projects.Research technical accounting issues related to all University benefits and investment reporting.Interact with University and Divisional management and the Tax Department to ensure complex/large transactions are handled properly and tax implications are appropriately reviewed and addressed.Develop and implement policies and procedures related to GAAP Accounting for benefits and investments.Manage the day-to-day accounting functions for responsible areas including reviewing divisional journal entries to ensure proper posting in SAP.Review of GAAP reporting hierarchy in Analysis for responsible accounting areas.Provide excellent customer service to divisions, departments and faculty and provide information to JHU personnel in a prompt, accurate and cordial fashion.Supervise, manage, develop, coach and mentor staff.Supervisory responsibility for two staff a Senior Investments Accountant and a Senior Benefits Accountant.Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field required.Seven years of progressively responsible related work experience.Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*Experience with auditing or in an external financial reporting function including managing and interacting with external auditors.Benefit plan accounting experience and/or investment accounting experience, preferred.CPA preferred.SAP experience a plus.Supervisory experience a plus.Experience with various software applications (eg spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Proficiency in advanced Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint and various other applications.JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.
