The American Association of Geographers (AAG) is a nonprofit scientific and educational society with professional members from nearly 100 countries who are at the forefront of academic and applied geography globally. AAG members share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography, which they cultivate through the AAG's annual meeting, scholarly journals, and other events and communications, including affinity groups and more than 60 specialty groups. Now in its second century, the AAG is in the midst of a transformation to serve its members more effectively and advance geographical expertise and viewpoints in local, national, and global discussions of public policy, education, urban and transportation planning, environmental sustainability, and other fields.Location:Hybrid Position (Washington, DC and Remote)Position:The Director of Finance works closely with the Chief Operations Officer and the Executive Director and is responsible for managing the AAG Accounting Department. The ideal candidate will have proven experience as an accountant, preferably in a senior role. As a strong communicator and skilled financial analyst, the Director of Finance will make it their mission to streamline our budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting processes. The Director of Finance will produce thorough financial reports for senior management to help improve our operational efficiency.Essential ResponsibilitiesWorking with current AAG staff and consultants:Prepare the AAG annual financial auditConduct financial analysis and preparing financial reports in a timely mannerDevelop and implement an effective system of accountingManage the payroll system and maintaining accurate recordsEnsure finances are managed according to Federal guidelines, AAG policies and procedures, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)Monitor and report on sponsored program budgets and expenditures Ensure compliance with all Federal regulations and reporting for sponsored programsFile and submit all required Federal, State, and local government reportsMonitor cash flow, investments, and restricted fundsReconcile general ledger accountsEstablish and maintain internal controls to ensure compliance with financial and human resources policies and proceduresCoordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the AAG Council, and assess any changes necessaryIn conjunction with the Executive Director, oversee the annual budgeting and planning process, administer and review all financial plans and budgets, monitor progress and changes, and keep senior management abreast of financial statusUpdate and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve/update the finance department's overall policy and procedure manualOversee processing payroll and communicating with third-party payroll serviceSubmit employee retirement contributions and company match to TIAA-CREFWork with HR Consultant on administering employee benefits in compliance with all regulations and AAG policies and proceduresQualificationsBachelor's degree or higher in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration At least 8 (eight) years of overall professional experience; ideally experience with broad financial managementHas experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program areaAbility to translate financial concepts to - and to effectively collaborate with - programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgroundsA track record in grants managementTechnology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting softwareA successful track record in setting priorities, keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision makingExcellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external individuals and organizationsPersonal qualities of integrity, honesty, credibility, and dedication to the mission of AAGThe AAG provides a generous and comprehensive employee benefits package, including group health, dental and vision plans, life/AD and long-term disability insurance, matching 403(b), flex plans for medical and dependent expenses, commuter Smart Benefits, and paid sick and annual leave.To Apply: Please submit your resume, cover letter, and desired salary requirements for consideration.Equal Opportunity Employer
