JOBThe function of this position is to perform chemical and biological analysis of environmental samples for wastewater and drinking water treatment facilities. Laboratory Analyst II is responsible for the application and evaluation of approved techniques and methodologies used in the analysis of wet chemistry and biological treatment processes. The position serves as a lead analyst. The Laboratory Analyst II will be responsible for daily laboratory assignments; running numerous water testing, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, provide information for new chemical Safety Data Sheet's, uses independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations.EXAMPLE OF DUTIESServes as a lead worker for other analysts by instructing, demonstrating, assigning, and reviewing standard laboratory procedures to ensure quality of initial preparation procedures for samples and solutions. Collects and performs laboratory analysis on assigned water and wastewater samples in accordance with federal, and state and laboratory standard operating procedures. Recognizes problems that may occur in an analytical procedure and troubleshoot known procedures or confer with others to identify possible problems affecting results; recommend changes to procedures, as appropriate.Sets up, calibrates, operates, and performs minor maintenance on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment ensuring verification of instrument and equipment accuracy.Prepares chemical and biological reagents as necessary for all laboratory analysis.Enters and validates laboratory data into a computer system Laboratory Information Management System for further analysis and reporting purposes; Assists in the maintenance and preparation of all necessary reports, logs and records on analytical results and quality control.Participates in Maryland Department of the Environment annual water and wastewater Proficiency Studies. Works with the Superintendents, Supervisors, and operators to ensure the samples are collected and analyzed to meet the requirements for each of the Wastewater Treatment Plants in Charles County. Monitors laboratory supplies and equipment determines the type and quantity required and completes the necessary purchase requisitions.Performs other related job duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience: Associate degree in related field. Three (3) years of experience in chemistry or microbiology and experience as a water/wastewater laboratory analyst; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license.Certification for the collection and analysis of drinking water.Special Requirements/Qualifications: Subject to work beyond the normal scheduled hours of work.Subject to weekend and holiday work.PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION, AND EMPLOYEES IN THIS POSITION ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of chemistry and microbiology as applied to the requirements of the laboratory.Knowledge of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.Ability to carry out daily assignments, follows through on matters, and uses independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations.Ability to perform standard water, wastewater, and sludge analyses accurately. Ability to maintain records and compile information for reports. Ability to lead laboratory operations on a shift.SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATIONPHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is mostly sedentary with periods of light physical activity.
