Job Announcement

The Urban Centers Section is charged with implementing land use and urban design considerations in Tysons and Reston in accordance with the county’s Comprehensive Plan. The Planner I position will support and participate in the activities of the DPD Urban Centers Section to include implementing planning objectives, conducting planning studies and development reviews, supporting the update of urban design guidelines, and participating in other initiatives as assigned to support the Section. Daily tasks can include research into the planning, zoning, and existing conditions of individual properties or areas, collecting and analyzing data, conducting site visits, and preparing review analyses of development proposals. The position works closely with other review agencies, as needed. The Planner I prepares a variety of written and graphic materials including research reports and staff reports for, and in support of, development application reviews and special studies, and makes presentations to senior staff, task forces and/or citizens groups. Performs other duties as assigned. This announcement may be used to fill one or more positions.

Employment Standards

Graduation from an accredited, four-year college or university in a planning-related field.

Four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. This class can serve as a bridge class enabling individuals who do not meet the educational or professional experience standards listed above to qualify for this class by possessing four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. The purpose of this bridge class is to promote upward mobility within the Fairfax County workforce. However, persons qualifying for this class on the basis of their technical experience may not substitute this technical experience for education, or for professional experience, in order to qualify for other employment opportunities

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. Bachelor’s degree in planning or closely related field. Academic and/or progressively responsible experience in the elements of urban design, GIS software applications, and comprehensive land use planning. Strong abilities in written and oral communications. Ability to handle multiple deadlines. Experience using word processing, e-mail, developing and maintaining databases, publishing software such as Adobe Creative Suite, and GIS.

Position is primarily sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items less than 10 pounds in weight. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
