Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. Under the supervision of the Code Specialist II, Technical Support Branch, Building Division, LDS, evaluates and processes applications, plans and testing data for building plan review and the periodic inspections programs for elevators and cross connections. Ensures compliance with Fairfax County policy, the building code and corresponding referenced standards. Communicates code requirements and regulations to developers, contractors, the public and other Fairfax County agencies. Advises applicants on code, permit and periodic inspections requirements. Responds to plan and periodic inspections inquiries. Reviews work processes and provides input, guidance, and training when required. Resolves safety-related matters in a timely manner. Drive county vehicle to visit job sites. Perform other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to select, utilize and maintain tools and technology, including adaptive tools and new technology to facilitate work or a process
Working in knowledge in the practical application of engineering science and technology to include applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design, maintenance, or production of approved plans, permits or construction and maintenance of structures, facilities or equipment
Working knowledge of applicable county, state and federal laws, codes and regulations
Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSES:
Driver's license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to stand, bend, squat and twist upper body up to an hour; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Visual acuity to read data and construction documents on computer monitors. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds such as boxes of files and large construction plan sets. Ability to operate a county vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee of this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driving records check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process.
