Job Announcement

Serves as a senior expert on a team of IT professionals, technical staff, and contractors in database management, data and reporting architecture functions for the Fairfax County IT enterprise, to include strategy, design, engineering, maintenance and operational oversight and support, responsible for the design, management, maintenance, and monitoring of SQL and other database environments. Responsibilities include:
  • Provides support for the daily operations coordinating the activities and staff across the various technical specialties associated with enterprise-wide and independent applications databases, reporting and data analytics development.
  • Advises agencies’ IT Analysts in determining database environments and structure. Ensures seamless implementation and process for deploying technology solutions that support applications and data requirements for multiple data-base types; ensures operational reliability and continuity.
  • Acts as an integral part of the team, works closely with the applications and systems analysts, server and storage managers and analysts, other IT and business managers and analysts to develop and execute IT programs.
  • Develops COOP for ensuring database management coverage and response to troubles 24x7. Advises DIT directors and managers, and departmental IT analysts on related IT policy, solutions and issues.
  • Requirement to be available on a 24x7 basis to respond to incidents, conduct tests, support operations maintenance, perform investigations, project implementation, and emergency event activation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, or related field; plus five years’ experience in the database management systems area, with three years’ experience in one specific system such as DB2, IDMS, or Oracle.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Hands on technical knowledge designing, installing, and configuring Microsoft SQL Server 2014, 2016, and 2017 in an always on state for fail-over. Hands on technical experience with migrating Oracle databases to SQL database on Windows on premise or Azure environment, and a strong background in database warehouse knowledge is a plus. Should have extensive knowledge work with applications groups around integration of applications into our SQL environment. Experience running SQL, and/or HANA databases in a shared service environment. Azure or AWS is a plus. Strong background and experience with Integration & Test experience around SQL backup methodologies, and strong analytical and troubleshooting Windows Environments are a must. Should possess some knowledge in the design of Oracle databases, and their table structures, and backup methodologies.
